NGC memories of exile in PA

No offense to anyone who lives in PA. I’ve got many fond memories of living there for 5 years. My sister is having a baby shower and found a bunch of pics I had forgot about! Brought back memories for sure!

And sometimes I get jealous of the kids with actual modern muscle cars to choose from. My budget excluded Camaro’s or Trans Ams. I had a cavalier budget!





Might’ve had more money if I didn’t roast my tires off, but then I wouldn’t have these pics to remind me at one time I WAS that idiot kid!!! Now I’m just that idiot! 😂

I moved back to Hawaii via a 10 yr. delay in AZ after living in Chester,  Wiconisco (Lykens) and NJ (Oranges...and I don't mean the fruit)  The long grey Winters were a drag.  I need the sunlight.

Never lived in PA...but have been through many towns there....grew up in upstate NY, so close by. 

Some nice rural areas, but winters, like in upstate NY are too long and too cold.

Whenever I think of PA, I think of the movie..."The Deer Hunter" (a real classic!)

 In the mid 70's while stationed at Norfolk, sort of, a good friend was from Oley, Pa. We used to go there when we could. A mutual friend had a band that played a lot of Jeff Beck. He played in small bars in the Oley area. Man, that was fun. The only people that drank more beer than those folks were submarine sailors and the british navy. Crikey, from what I remember of it the area was beautiful and back then the party was hardy. I have good memories of Pennsylvania, tho I never had to live there.

My home town is in western Pa. It's a beautiful area, but suffers from excessive taxation, over regulation, and long cold winters.  My town was a hub in the Underground Railroad. Add to that the various immigrant groups who moved  to that region to work the steel mills, coal mines and factories, and you have pretty good luck finding ethnic food.    Great riding to be had in almost any direction except west, where it flattens out pretty quickly.      I go back to Western PA/Eastern Ohio every year to see family. I'd love to have a summer home there.

I'm from PA and after living in various areas around the country now live in SW PA.  PA has been defined as: two cities that hate each other separated by Alabama.  aka Pennsyltucky

Words that I've heard instead of Alabama in that comparison:  Kentucky, the Amish, hillbillies, Deliverance.

I live in south central PA. Many great riding roads from farmland to the mountains. Some to the East, great roads to the west on your way to the Laurel Highlands. And north there are plenty of winding roads over the mountains and through the woods.  Catskill mountains are 4 hours away, Finger Lake region about 5 hours, the beautiful Adirondack region 6 hours and Blue Ridge Parkway 3.5 hours south. And if you long for the ocean, it’s about a 3 hour ride. But staying in PA, so many great roads for riding here.

I’ve had multiple tours across PA..

My favorite was North East out of Port Jervis

Eventually hooking up w Rt6 west across the top tier of the state continuously moving up hill/up stream until the middle of the state at Galeton

When you drop south from there, you are in “Deer Hunter” territory

Specifically, Cherry Springs State Park, is a designated “dark spot”...for star gazing that is unaffected by city lights. Definitely a blank spot on the maps

Stayed there one night. I must have seen 20 deer the next morning...spooked me so bad I actually drove the speed limits

Worked my way further west thru the Allegheny National Forest

Then south to Raccoon Creek State Park. Don’t stay there, its a waypoint to Pittsburgh Intl Airport...jets overhead

My other favorite PA rides are the Cotoctin(sp?)  mountains, a region north of DC/Baltimore

Edit: just found it on the maps...its in Maryland. But continuing north of there is another blank spot between I81 and Rt15

Funny. I try to get out of PA as much as possible becaeu I fined the roads not so great and rather boring. I'd much rather be in the interior of WV, TN, NC or western VA. Roads are less populated and have elevation and directional changes.

Everything is relative. I am about 100 miles north of the PA state line. When we want to enjoy twisty roads with little traffic we head to northern Pennsylvania. The area bounded by the NYS line, US15, I-79 and I-80 has hundreds of miles of mostly deserted state roads in the mountains. 44, 144, 872, 120, 666, 555, many smaller routes and if you have dirt bike or dual sport Tioga County (Wellsboro) has hundreds miles of fire roads to explore. Sure WV is probably tops as a state but just about anywhere in the Appalachians you can wear your sidewalls off.

If you don't want to ruin PA roads don't travel to states below it on the other side of the Mason Dixon line.

I agree, south of I-80 for the most part is too heavily populated except for a area south of Clearfield to Maryland which I found mostly rural. I guess what John refers to as Pennsyltucky.

I live adjacent to the I-81 corridor and it blows. Anything north or north east towards Harrisburg or beyond makes me cringe. Good new is WV is close and I have a great back way to Berkley Springs. The real fun starts once the right turn is made off of US522 and onto WV9 where it gets better and better with each mile south/southwest.

Pennsyltucky is considered to be the space between Pittsburg and Philadelphia.
