Veglia speedo gauge bouncing needle??
« on: October 18, 2020, 07:54:41 PM »
Greetings all........ so replaced the cable on a friend of mines V 11 Sport with the Veglia gauge set as the needle was bouncing a bit ( oddly when run for a while at above 50 mph it seemed to settle down )
Anyway with the new cable assembly installed it still has a needle bounce?? Any ideas?
PS Its the one that has the 30 deg. angle drive... low mileage unit.... and everything else in the gauge seems to work fine.

Thx in advance

POS Veglia Borletti...

My tach crapped out a few years ago....and I HATE instruments that don't work!!!  So, I bought a new set (speedo & tach), and installed the tach, and sent the old tach to the UK for repair, and it sits as a spare now.

Hey JJ... what about the speedo?
Did it work at all and do you still have it?

I don't know about spine frames, but on my EV the cable makes a pretty sharp turn coming out of the trans. That or any tight bends along the path can introduce enough spin resistance to cause the cable to "wind and unwind" (it's just a spring after all) Straightening up the path with the judicious use of cable ties may eliminate the bounce.

The angle drive on the transmission can also be the culprit.

Yes, the speedo is brand new OEM and I still have it.

Needle bounce tends to be a warped drag cup or bearing on its way out, maybe find yourself a instrument fitter/repairer. I'd suggest you look at it yourself but you really need the bezel press to get into them and put them back together, without it its a PITA the bezels tend to be brass.

I repair and service airhead gauges professionally and have worked on my mechanical Veglias. Mine are 70s and 80s gauages, but doubt they're much different than the newer mechanical ones. It seems the Guzzi cables aren't an inch longer than they need to be - which means you'd better optimize routing for the smoothest flow. It's also possible you've got some resistance in the angle drive.

Even when mine are perfectly set up, the needles jiggle on the lower end of the scale. I think that has to do with the design of these gauges more than anything. The 'driving' force in a mechanical gauge is a spinning magnet which creates a force field acting upon an aluminum cup surrounding it. The magnets in the German gauges have four poles while the Veglias have two. The German gauges are smooth at all speeds so it's my guess that's the cause of the needle bounce.

If the needle didn't bounce previously, then of course that would indicate something needs fixing.

You can test the meter using a drill and squared off nail that fits the gauge. That will tell you if its the cable or the gauge. You can adjust how close the magnet is to the vane. If it touches the the vane the needle will bounce. If the bearing is starting to go and you back off the magnet it may give a few thousand more miles even its no longer in calibration. Veglias are highly optimistic anyway so backing off the mgnet may be closer to reality.
As for the bezel, its is a PITA but if you carefully pry it off only lifting a small amount as you work your way around you can get it off without it breaking. You get one chance at this. The next time you take it apart it will break..

Very much appreciated gentlemen.
I will get to work on looking at those possible issues.
As far as I know the gauge needle was not bouncing up until recently??

I've gotten a lot more than one time out of a bezel.

AH Fan (Austin Healey?) - sounds like something changed and probably not the gauge considering other stuff that's happened. Did you lube the cable? It needs a very lightweight grease. I've put moly powder on mine that's gotta help, but the needles still jitter a little at low speeds.

OK.....update.I disassembled the whole mess again and found the immediate cause of the needle bounce I believe.
For what ever reason it had to do with to sharp of corner for the cable and sheath all of a sudden???
Played with the routing of original cable and now everything is functioning correctly... needle is dead calm up to 60 MPH.

Not sure how or why that happened but thought I would pass this adventure along to others if of any use.

Ciao
