V9 Roamer snatchy throttle
« on: October 18, 2020, 08:47:43 AM »
My (new to me) V9 Roamer has a positively dangerous transition from off throttle to on   - like when maneuvering around a small roundabout.

I know that some of it might be me learning the bike, but it feels excessive

It was main dealer serviced 2k miles ago

I've  taken out every bit of slack I can in the pull throttle cable and it's still problematic.

What else should I be looking at to fix this?

Cheers

tris -- the first question is: What changed since your last service?

Presumably the throttle operated satisfactorily when serviced or the dealer could have advised a correction.  So did you make any mechanical or electrical changes to your V9?  Or to the fuel?  California mandates different fuel formulas summer and winter.

I have a V7 III but I agree with you the V9 throttle operation should be smooth and predictable.

That's the problem Burt, I didn't own the bike when it was serviced,  so don't have a base to go from

I'm in the UK and all the fuel sold is to the same British Standard

I've run 4 or 5 tanks through it since I ve owned it but with no noticable difference

That does push us in the direction of speculation.

I'm thinking lean mixture.

Is the throttle response better when the engine is cold (ie, before the ECU is in closed loop mode)?  Or on cold days vice warm days?

Apparently MG used a mixed plastic-metal fuel filter in some models.  Is the V9 one of them?  If so, a partial leakage before separation would reduce fuel pressure and affect atomization by the injectors which would lead to a lean burn.

Intake air leaks are another candidate.

Does the V9 have the V7 III's Secondary Air System?  If so, problems including removal without an ECU remap would affect the AFR seen by the HEGOs.

There could be some electrical glitches but your description seems to point to a systemic fault which, like is said above, lean mixture.

That's all I got.

When I bought a Stelvio and  a v7 they both seemed snatchy compared to my smooth old guzzis.See If you can ride another V9 to compare.I just got used to mine.
