NGC - That old vinyl must have been good!
« on: October 19, 2020, 08:04:58 PM »
Playing a John Lee Hooker album (That's Where It's At) that I think I bought in 1969.  It has a lot of miles on it, along with more than a few clicks as it plays.  Regardless, it still plays well, regardless of having been played on some really cheap 'pottery wheels' over the years, including this one.  I can only guess these old LPs used some top grade materials.  This album was produced by Stax Records.

Great record!!  I seem to remember they really started to get thin and cheezy in the mid 70's. Most came all warped right out of the sleeve

If you're ever in Memphis,  be sure to tour the Stax records museum.  :thumb:

I was fortunate to see JLH play 2 nights in a row at a college bar in my hometown of Charleston WV in 1962.  Place was packed.  Kenny, the promoter and fellow student, had done a good job 'promoting' the venue.  Small bar.  JLH had no accompaniment, just sat on a folding chair, and kept the beat with his foot.  We all sat on the floor surrounding him.  I had not heard of him at the time, but became a fan immediately.

Yeah , the older records were thicker . Read somewhere years ago that the recording companies decreased thickness as a cost saving measure .
