He was lumped into country music, but he was more than that. . He didn't fit the defined rocknroll or country mold so he did not get his due recognition in his day. More like a singer/somgwriter story teller. Like a Guy Clark that could really burn it up.

Saw him at Cains Ball room in Tulsa in like 1979.
It was NOT a music country crowd. Wild & drunk, pumped-up outlaw hippies, more like... He could flat out ROCK IT!

JJW fit into the "outlaw" scene, no Chet Adkins Nashville in that boy!

Jerry Jeff Walker dead at 78.

One of my recent projects is to rip all my CDs onto my new computer.  Just started to rip Jerry Jeff Walker, and wanted to check genre for my list.  His family has just announced his death from cancer.  He was 78.  First saw him at the Armadillo World Headquaters in the 70s.
God speed Jerry.

I'd say he's "kicking hippies asses and raising hell".

Definitely raise your beer.

Jerry Jeff Walker... The Gypsy Songman.

His music escorted me through the 80's, always singing his tunes.  Not just the stuff that people may have heard but the deep tracks that really spoke to my very soul.  Gonna miss the man who penned the term Cow Jazz.

We would go see and more importantly hear him anytime he came to Maine, festivals to dive bars...  One very memorable show he was at the Rockland folk festival, Jerry Jeff drives in and we strolled over to say Hi.  I started singing a tune to him and he and I stood right there in the parking lot and sang that song.  The song was pertaining to his Wife Susan and I felt very close to the lyrics, my wife's name is Sue and she is the very same person that he sings about.

Yeah, Susan you are a jewel
'Bout the rarest I've ever seen
And I wish I could polish off all the edges
Of my craziest dreams...

Rest In Peace kind troubadour.

Do yourself a favor, Google Jerry Jeff songs and give a listen.  You will be so glad you did.
