Very scenic place. I remember 25 years ago traveling backroads going to Colorado on that route. And I was shocked to see this red Martian landscape mesas with this lovely green grass growing over it. What the hell is that in the backend of Okla? I learned it was the Gloss Mountains.
I finally had a chance to bring Bev up there when Gary Scott had his Canton Lake Campout.
Not a large area but there's not a place I've ever seen that looks like that.

along the south side of the Cimarron River, you'll see "breaks" (such as this) and steep (near vertical) buffs while on the north side of the river you'll see hills (Cimarron Hills) and dunes that have not been nearly so severely eroded. The red dirt is identical, so it must be due to the prevalent and strong south wind that seems never to go away.
