Age 17...my first *** NEW *** motorcycle...1971 Yamaha RT1-B 360 Enduro....Cost about $999 at the time...I put $200 down...my dad co-signed a loan for the balance...and I washed dishes weekends at a local restaurant in Rhinebeck, NY for two (2) years to pay it off!

I was a happy camper and it was a cool bike! :thumb:     I graduated high school in 1972 on this bike!

In ‘76 the 350 Sherpa T was $1,150.00 I paid cash at the Bul-Pen. It was the local Bultaco- Penton shop. The owner struck it rich with Amway and ditched the motorcycle business

I actually owned that exact model, got it to ride while I was getting my '54 Harley "barn find" (actually a garden-find, it was in BAD shape) on the road.   It was good for 55 MPH on the highway; I rode it several times from Farmville to Blacksburg, VA to see Fay on the weekends.   They were nice little bikes.  I was 21 or so when I owned it ... when I see them today, I marvel at my temerity (to give it a nice name) in taking that thing on the mountainous 4 lane highways, including Interstate 81 more than once .... !

My buddy Tim has one of those old Hondas, I’d love to find a pair of those black rimmed glasses with the fake Asian eyes and get a picture of him on it. Can’t seem to find those anymore 🤔

I like most all of those Hondas with that engine design especially the CL versions. Did see one of these when I was in Japan in the mid sixties.

My first real bike was a 305 Superhawk...69.  What a trust steed.  In February of '70 I got a weekend pass from Ft Holabird in Baltimore, flew to Boston, visited mom and the dragged the CB -77 out of the basement.  Put "fresh" gas in it and rode it from Boston to  Baltimore.  It never skipped a beat in the 10 hour ride (not allowed on the NJ Turnpike etc kind of issues)>  Sold it to my class leader for a $1 when I left Holabird for Nam.

I could'nt find any auction RESULTS on BaT for a Honda 305 / Super Hawk / Dream, but did find this on the iconic Honda CL350.

They are not giving these away anymore either...

I had an ancient Honda 175 that I rebuilt from zero.  It was my only transportation.  Sometimes work had me go to meetings in Boston.  I'd be WOT the whole distance on the Mass Turnpike, doing maybe 55 mph max, while cars were flying by.

I guess life is better now.

Don't blame you JJ. :thumb:

At the end of the day, would it be FUN to have a restored CB160 like this to putt around the hood.... and show up occasionally at your local Bike Night, etc.

The answer is "YES"...but would it be practical?  "NO" unless you had extra money / garage space...

So many cool vintage bikes...so little time / money / garage space! :thumb:

When I ran out of garage space, I put a bike in the lawnmower shed out back.  Then I built a wing on the side of the shed, then on the back.  The lawnmower and dual sport bikes got parked under the wing.

Unless you live in a condo there is always a way to park more bikes.   :thumb:

Now I have a 25x30 shop which is half of a 30 x 50 barn for my bikes and tools.  I moved most of my woodworking out under the 14' wing to try and minimize sawdust on the bikes.

Hell yes, I lusted after the CB160.  I was 13 in '67, and was riding a trail 90.  Something like a Bonneville was outside of my ability to imagine, but that CB160....

Yes...and of course, there was the "Street Scrambler" version, the CL160-D...which was also awesome back then! :thumb:

Ha!  Maybe that's the CB77 I bought in 1972 or so after I returned from RVN - don't remember the particulars of who I bought it from, but it was in the DC area.  Rattle-can painted white by a previous owner.  Ran well but put my right arm and right leg asleep from the vibration thru the handlebars & right foot-peg whenever I rode it for more than 20-30 minutes at 60 mph on the DC Beltway.  GAVE it to my dad as a Christmas present because I didn't have any money to buy a "proper" present.  He took it to Phoenix when he retired; he rode it occasionally until my Mom made him stop, rebuilt the motor just because he wanted to see how it was put together, & finally sold it to a local kid.  I was a bit pissed that he didn't ask me if I wanted it back before he sold it.  10-15 years ago I test rode one for sale in my local area that I could afford at the time. It was so ratty that I was amazed that I wasn't leaving a trail of parts on the road, because even then nice ones were getting pricy.  I was also amazed at how small it seemed to me - I didn't remember it being that small when I owned mine so many years earlier.

The list goes on...I had a Yamaha ad, from Cycle or Cycle Guide on my bedroom wall for years lusting after this two-stroke "Street Scrambler" - - - 1969 Yamaha DS6-C!! :thumb:    A green one, just like this (*SIGH*)

It never came to pass, and at age 17, I bought a brand new 1971 Yamaha RT-1B 360 Enduro, so I was happy.

A cousin had a 305 Dream he rode the crap out of in high school (including living three miles off pavement at the time). In the summer of 68 he also rode it double up from central KS into central Canada and back right before going into the army and then on to Nam. That trip pretty well killed the bike however.

Had no interest in bikes as a teenager....At 25 years od in 1972 I quit a good  to enroll in college. Sold my 69 Chevelle 396 four speed , buought a beat up 66 Corvair and without any clue why, bought an equally beat up 65B SA 650....When I took it for a test ride it was my first ride on a motorcycle.

A couple years ago I'd rode my Sportster to a CMAUSA meeting and met a guy who had rode his 1967 BSA 650 twin.   We were going the same direction home ... so ... we traded bike on the way to his house.   First thing , the  gear shift was on the wrong side !
Then when I got it up to 50 mph it vibrated a lot.  Fact is , my old 1971 Honda 350 twin would have ran circles around the 650 BSA.   It ran like it was designed too , but that was the problem !
I had a Honda 160 in 1975 that I rode all over ElPaso durning my miltary time there , It was a lot more fun to ride than my other bike - a Yamaha XS650 twin.
................... ................... ................... .........

I lusted after a 1960's Trimuph 650 twin .   The Yamaha XS650 was Yamaha's ansure to the Trimuph but the bore/stroke was way different.   The Kawasaki W-650 twin I have now is more like the Trimuph I wanted back then, but more smooth.

Good taste!

Here's a big brother survivor

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/mcy/d/san-carlos-1969-honda-cb77-superhawk/7220555791.html

That's over priced for its condition.    That's a $1,700 bike if the engine isn't stuck (ad doesn't say, just says, "ran when parked").

I paid $3,800 for my very nice, original, running, unrestored, '67 CB77 about 3 years ago.

I bought a CB160 for $700 in 2012.   This pic is as it was when I bought it.

I've removed the sissy bar, sourced better condition fenders, and had the fenders and side covers painted, but, haven't progressed much further than that, as other projects have taken priority over the years.   I did clean the carbs about two years ago, and de-rusted the fuel tank as well.  Maybe I'll get it back together over the winter.  The fuel tank paint is in good shape, as is the frame paint.   I think I'll repaint the engine side cases and leave everything else original with some patina, as a mostly "unrestored" survivor.

The biggest challenge with the CB160 is that no one makes an accurate reproduction exhaust for it, and good condition originals are very rare, and the cost as much as the bike is worth.   At least David Silver Spares offer a nice repro exhaust for the CB77.

Here is my unrestored 1968 CL175, successor to the CL160 in an earlier post:

I do have a CL160 as well, picked this up several years back for about $700.   P.O. had already gotten most of the chrome bits re-chromed, including the hard to find exhaust.   This is another one that has been waiting for several years for me to get to it.   I've since sourced fenders for it that haven't been cut.   I'll likely get the fenders, side covers, and fuel tank professionally painted.

The W650 is a nice bike.    It is smooth because it has a counter-balance shaft.
