Oil leak
« on: January 20, 2021, 03:55:33 PM »
Guzzi california EV1100
I was underneath it today and noticed a small amount of oil gathering around a small hole on the underside of the swingarm on the right side.
Is that bad?

Oh absolutely catastrophic, the world will tilt on its axis and the magnetic poles reverse, politicians will become honest etc.
Sorry.
In all probability you gave a weeping rear gearbox seal, give the oil the sniff test.
Check the gearbox and final drive oil levels, if its becomming bad, the gearbox will get slightly lower the final drive will over fill and youll get a Triumph like stain on the floor under the boot.
The plus in all this is your cardan joint and drive shaft splines arent running dry.
The negative is youll eventually need to change the seal.
If you are about to embark on a around the country oddssey, Id fix it now.
If your staying in your local couple of states with home as your base just keep an eye on it and the oil levels.
Its a bugger to change, there is the lip seal and underneath the speedodrive gear the seal also runs on is an o ring.
It may stay at its current leak rate and not get any worse, or.....it will, keep an eye on it, ride and enjoy.
Cheers
Pete (no not the Bungendore one)

I had an oil issue with my Stone when I first got it a few months ago. I changed the fluids, increasing the transmission fluid to 90 weight, cleaned underneath completely and waited to see where and new signs of leaking. After several hundred miles there was a little dampness but never a drip to the floor. Therefore, no further  action necessary or taken 👍

Thanks guys.
Yes the leak is just gathering around that hole.
Nothing dripping to the floor.
I removed the gearbox filler nut while on the centre stand and oil didn't come pissing out so I know it's not over filled.
The oil was changed just recently and I know from my experience of BMW'S that some people make the mistake of filling on the side stand resulting in over fill.
My first thought was rear main seal.
Tell me it isn't so

It's new to you. just dump the oils, all of them and refill with the right stuff and amount.

So, I let my EV sit for 6 months and came back to it. Started it and it dripped a little oil then stopped. Hasn’t dripped again. Great. Just needed a good running. But then the 92 K75 S started dripping a few drops a week. Since it’s not British I figured it needed to be fixed, so I bought the pieces to do a rear main seal job. But then I stuck my finger in the oil and smelled it. That’s not engine oil it’s gear oil!  So I bought new seals , etc. for the box. Before I started the job, I went to Autozone and was convinced to try Blue Devil Trans. Sealant. I know it’s supposed to be snake oil but since it costs twice as much as anything else, it must be good . Right? It called for one ounce so I put in two. Damned if it hasn’t leaked a drop in almost a year! A lesson here? Sniff your oil and if the leak isn’t too bad then maybe give the snake oil a shot before tearing it all apart.🥃🥃🥃

If the small hole is on the bottom of the swing arm and underneath the area where the universal joint would be the small hole may have a set screw Allen head type in there to hold the outer race of the bearing from rotating check that out you could easily plug the hole with a dab of silicone.

My 01 EV sits in Az for 9 months at a time. Always when I get there there is a puddle of engine oil under the oil pan. 2-4" across. If I ride it just a few miles it will leak like a seive when I stop. If I ride it 100 or so no more leaks for the next 3 months. I gave up trying to figure it out.

If it smells like gear lube the most likely cause is the clutch push rod seals. There's an o-ring fix for that.

Leak back at the swingarm - not sure that would be clutch pushrod seals...

Mine did that until I attacked a little rag on the end of the hose and no more drips...... makes it to the cement basement floor 🤔😂😂😂

Yes there is a little grub screw in there.
I tweeked it with the appropriate size Allen key.
It was tight but did still nip up slightly.
