Thanks for the article. I have my grandfather's watch - Illinois Watch Co, same dial, different case - this one's gold. Mine is a "lever set". You don't pull up the stem to set the time. Instead you open the front of the case and pull out a small lever. You then set the time using the stem, push the lever back, and close the case. The railroads used this system to prevent accidental change of the time.
When I win the lottery I will send the watch to this outfit to get it cleaned and refurbished.

This is the shadow box that I did for my dad memories. I figured I could lug this around a lot easier than anything else he had collected! The railroad watch was my grandfather's and is a Howard.
The Buck pocketknife at the bottom was the one my Dad always had with him. He would clean my dirty nails with it during the sermon. The others' are my grandfather and great grandfather's.

Nice article...
I've got my great grandfather's pocket watch also...an Elgin National Gold watch from 1877. It still works, but getting a restoration done would be nice too to freshen it up.
It has a lot of nice engravings on the outside of the case, very artistic. Probably ought to get it looked at and appraised one day...nice to have these family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation.

I still have my dad's pocketwatch. It's silver, and has a hinged plate over the normal rear cover. It has my dad's initials (stylized - JJG) cut into it. I have been able to open the rear cover in the past, but recently, it wouldn't open. I'm going to find a good watchmaker in the Cleveland area and take it to them. I can only guess that the watch is 100 years old. I don't think the brand was very expensive, it was made by Elgin, but what do I know about watches?
My personal 'old' watch is a Seiko Diver's watch that I bought in 1974 ...... sort of a present to me from the commission for making a nice computer sale. The pic is a bit blurry .............
