when your BUBs become cow-bells...
« on: January 24, 2021, 01:26:21 PM »
I have BUBS on all my Guzzi , I am a sucker for the songs they sing. This set of Conti replicas have decided to add "more cow-bell" to the left side.  I am thinking about putting muffler baffling material around the louvered core. At least they won't clang.
What have others done to remedy this problem, or am I the only person this has happened too?

I have an old set of BUB's on the CX100. The sound of them are pretty sweet (I think) but they're not yelling MORE COWBELL! Yet. But I'll be listening now!

Got some DB killers from a Mistral set stuffed in mine and it actually sounds OK and not too loud. When I ride past cows in West Marin and Sonoma County  there are no heads turning or dirty looks...

I have Bubs on a ‘80 SP/LeMans clone. They do sound good.

I have Bubs on my v50.  It sounds much more powerful than it is.  I’ve used steel wool to stuff pipes, but muffler packing wrapped around the core lasts much longer.

Almost everyone I hear speak about BUB's has glowing praise for them.  Hasn't anyone come up with an alternative that actually, currently, is available?  BUB's are long gone, not available...

My first SP had the complete BUB system. The crossover was in the front and changing fluids was a delight ! The full system looked as good as it sounded...  these days a replacement for the Conti replica is hard to find. The Keihan would be a good choice and if you were really driven you could build your own from Cone Engineering.
I already silenced the cow-bell with baffling material and should be rumbling around next week.

Here is a good shot of my first Guzzi with BUBS.

when I ran BUBs on a Cal III they were repacked once a year, or less depending on mileage.
I used Moose muffler packing fiberglass secured with steel coat hanger wire.  As the 'glass' burned out gradually the dB's went up "subtly".  When the wire began to clang it was time for a repack and a new exhaust system BBQ repaint.

If I had a source for stainless steel wool that would be my choice.

So,...  eventually I put a Mistral system on it.

I visited the BUB factory when attending a Guzzi Rally in Grass Valley California many years ago.  There was a keg of beer for the visitors, and pride of place was a bike being set up for a land speed attempt.  I have photos somewhere, but I can't remember the details off the top of my head.

Anyone know how this went and whether any land speed records were broken?

http://www.keihan.co.uk/

I see that they have the cross-over pipe, the exhaust pipes, and the silencers... all for the 850 T5.  Turin or others, have you tried these folks out?

Do you have to jet richer, or adjust the needles up in the slides, to compensate for deeper breathing?

Is the product really nice, and do they sound nice and fit well?

TIA

I always know it’s time to repack the Supertrapp on my SR500 when it starts to pop a little from the mixture getting lean. It’s just thin rolled steel so has to be painted pretty much every year:

I think most vintage bikes sound better with a good aftermarket pipe system. I looked at the Keihins after reading these posts and I think they would be great for a build.  They are pretty and don’t seem super expensive for the quality.  I’ve used Cone Engineering silencers also.  They require more fabrication for mounting, and the “straight core” series are too loud for me. The reverse cone “quiet core” mufflers are classic looking. I built a system with a CE muffler and stainless header for the SR but missed the Supertrapp mid range and sound so went back.

What was this post about again?  Sorry to hijack.
