974 miles on the Norge
« on: July 04, 2021, 05:34:52 PM »
Last weekend a couple of friends and I made a trip from Spokane into Montana and back again. Two of us trailered our bikes from the Seattle area the day before. This turned out to be a good idea for the trip home.
Starting out early from Spokane we got onto I-90 and went through Idaho and onto Missoula Mt. We stayed in a small town a little south called Hamilton. The next day (Sunday) we headed off to Great Falls on Highway 200. We saw hundreds of BMW riders travel;ing the other way. The weather was cool enough that we stopped mid way to put some more layers on. In Seattle that day it got to a record breaking 100+ degrees. We stayed the night in a small town called Shelby. The high temp was about 84 degrees. On Monday we started heading west on highway 2 into Glacier National Park. Again the weather was pretty cool, but that was to change as the day went on. In Kalispell we saw 85 degrees and in Libby it got into the high 90's. We spent the night in Bonner's Ferry. It was over 100 by the time we got there. It was also another 100 degree day in Seattle. The next day we did a short ride back to Spokane and trailered the bikes home. All across Washington state it was 100+ degrees until we crested Snoqualime Pass. By the time we got home it was about 84 degrees. We beat the heat.
974 Miles most of the roads were 70 MPH with 80 MPH of the freeways we didn't go 80 very much.
20.533 Gallons of gas For a total of $77.23
47.43 MPG  All in all a good ride for the 2008 Norge. Still running well.

Riding big miles can be fun. Its fun in a different way from riding twisty's or 2 lane back road  but miles on a motorcycle are better than miles in a cage.

My best day was 1144 miles in around 19 hours. Earlier this  year Chambersburg PA to Titusville FL in 15 hours (973 miles) and the a few weeks ago Chambersburg PA to Watertown Wisconsin (800+ miles) in 15 hours.

Running 20 or 30 gallons of fuel in a motorcycle in less than 24 hours is a feat in and of itself.

I've seldom had time to amble, smell the yclept roses, et. al.  I have done a bunch of bun burner golds, +100 (1600 total in 24hrs.), because I enjoy running big miles, quickly. Very satisfying. Handling weather changes is often the puzzler. Sad to say; I've aged out of that form of motorcycling.
BTW: I've done all but 3 on SV650S's. The 3 were ferrying mc's for others. As in; 'No body rides that far'.  Happy Independence Day.  R3~

Yesterday I rode  the National Road Rally here in England and clocked up 241.4 miles in 9 hours on the V9  average about 32mph

My ass was wasted and that was with a sheepskin seat cover

Makes me quite a light weight compared with the above

That was 974 miles over 4 days. My best day was about 550 miles the first year I got the Norge. 300 miles in a day is about perfect for me.
