Oops…i did it again
« on: September 30, 2021, 07:16:09 AM »
A guy at my local market freeeeeaaaaked when he noticed my 1970 R5 YaMAha

Then he sold me this. $1000.

The front fender looks, maybe not, to have been cut short by an inch or two

Front left top on the headlight looks scraped

Rusted battery area

But ITS ALL THERE

Ghost Motorcycles Long Island sales records, original Ducati owners manual, 500, 1500 mile card records for maintenance

Yippee!,  or I’m facked, don’t know yet…we’ll see

If i had my druthers, I’d just get it running and keep as much patina as possible

Great score.  Please let me know if you want to flip it. I would remove and clean up the motor and mount it in my office while I restored the bike. They are so pretty.

Very cool- congratulations!   Great to see someone get a good price on a complete original bike.  Just get it running and enjoy it, man.

Those late 66-67 square body narrowcase bikes have the best Kickstarter configuration.  A bigger carb and camshaft makes a lot of difference in performance vs the sedate stock Monza tune. The Front fender has been bobbed.  Rear fender might be too.  I've got a spare tank but don't think I have any of those fenders left here but will look.  But they won't be the that nice looking old argent paint...

Your mention of sales records from Ghost Motorcycles brought back memories of a good friend and his Ducati.  He took Greyhound from Charleston WV to New York where he took delivery of a 250cc Ducati Diana at Ghost, which he then rode back home to Charleston.  I was a few months away from purchasing my first bike, but this certainly contributed to wanting one.

What a great find! I would like to see it cleaned up and ridden but if I got my hands on one just like yours I most likely would restore it, can’t help myself. Please post a video of it running.

Sal DeFeo was the owner of Ghost Motorcycles in the early 1960s, when I worked as a mechanic for Montgomery Motors (Velocette, BSA, Ariel) in Mount Vernon, NY.  Sal would undercut any other dealer.  Some bikes, he really discounted and sold in the crate and you bought them and did the set-up and first service yourself.  If you were mechanically skilled and had the tools and space it was a good deal.  Sal set all kinds of sales records, but didn't win any popularity contests with other dealers.

250cc Ducati Diana

Caused some serious young guy lust.. a dealer in my home town had one. Big white tach (never have gotten over that)  racing megaphone came with it along with the stock muffler. It was out of my price range, though.. $600, IIRC.

So, a guy you talked to at a local market saw your Yammie, then asked what you thought about an old bike that's been in his grandma's shed for years? Something like that? I am always fascinated about the WAY some deals originate.

Regardless, my vote is to get it running and make sure the wheel bearings and tires are up to snuff, and then RIDE it.
