A YDS3 was my first "real" bike. I don't remember too many skeeters in my neighborhood. I put quite a few miles on it before I got my BMW. I don't think the neighbors enjoyed the howl from the carbs as much as I did.      I think they had figured I was a lost cause at that point anyway.

Owning a "smokey" two-stroke these days would be equivalent to the modern....and very annoying.... "Coal Rolling" spewed from those huge diesel trucks!!

As with you, my memories are of a YDS3, but this "will do."  I love the sound; the vid was a time machine.

It is all of that and more.  We love it.  Come visit whenever this way.  GRAND roads out of my driveway.

Bear in mind, however, that we live at the tip top of the county, thus are surrounded by W.V. on three sides.  We are thus not ... erm .. in "genteel" Frederick County.  Again, we chose that and like it.  Lots.  Hope I am here for years to come and don't leave until I wear a toe-tag in an ambulance without lights or siren. 

Seriously, though, let's just say that Greta Thunberg would not be happy here. 

As for how you started this thread, I am already thinking about a road trip south with my new "TOWFIT" and trailer.  Probably won't be happening, but after watching a few y/t vids of YDS3's and YM1's, I am wondering about that YM1 in Florida.

A friend who knows more about vintage Nipponese motorcycles than I do -- and who doesn't -- thinks it's worth about $2K, and maybe $2.5K.

His concern -- as he would be helping me making such happen -- is that engine might need top end (pistons, rings, overbore) and bottom-end (crank seals).  He says that I should plan on $500-1000 in costs.  New tires, and some typical nit picks like petcock gaskets.

Oh, and parts are expensive.  On the bright side, my friend assures me -- and I remember this from my three Yams in the mid-60's, which even I could work on (and not break) -- they are easy to wrench.  Moreover, there is local shop that specializes in vintage Japanese and Euro motos.

Doing the math objectively will never, of course, put a motorcycle in any garage, but I am not sure this is the one.  Nor am I sure it isn't.  I want a red one, and painting that one would be a crime.

In the gauge indicator lights, I presume the "N" is for neutral, and "H" is for headlight high beam.

What is the "C" light for?

C for charging light? Becomes lit when you turn on the key, goes out when you’re supplying plus voltage to the battery…I’m thinking…anybody correct me

I’d suggest it’s worth $4k. It’s a time capsule. Beautiful lines and coloring everywhere. Perfect patina. Check the contrast of the cylinder texture vs the chrome bit right next to it.. I would stick to cleaning it not restoring. Wonderful example of japanese design

And JJ, it would be hard these days to fog the neighborhood..newer oils and all, and a proper setting on the autolube. I get a little on a cold start but that’s about it…but the noise is the same!!!
