Sorta Guzzi. How to track your favorite shark

Ok, I can’t think of a clear Guzzi connection to the shark tracker app.  No.  Wait.  I rode my Guzzi V7 to the Texas Aquarium in Corpus Christi where I learned about this. 

Amazing technology.   Pick your favorite shark.  Then you can track it online.

Oh.  Some of those sharks lay down some serious mileage, like Guzzi riders.  Some look like the track Randy Tefft, from far north New Hampshire down to south Texas.  I bet a shark in the water travels faster than Randy on a Rokon.

That app got me to quit swimming around here. I looked at it a few years ago and realized that great whites come into Wellfleet harbor thousands of times a year. It will also ping you if a shark is spotted in your area.  I turned it off when it started pinging every hour all summer long.

I used to fish about 5-10 miles off the South Shore of Long Island...stripers, blues, etc.  Virtually every trip there would be a quiet lull...no fish, no seagulls, nothing. That meant that there were sharks in the area.  We'd move a couple of miles and get another hour or so of fishing in and then it would happen again.  They were probably following our chum lines.  Every once in a while we would see a fin, but they usually stayed pretty deep.  We could see them on our fish finder.  Big animals!

No connection to Guzzi, maybe, but aren’t you a lawyer?

I looked for me on there, but nada.  That said, as I am now, after 50 years, retired, pay no bar dues, and am labelled officially as a “Senior Counselor” — code for old and near irrelevant — the bar association probably removed my tracker!

As long as I am here discussing sharks and lawyers, some years ago, there was an Army JAG who was quite a legend in the military legal community.  I can tell stories about him in the 82d Airborne Division and later that would convert this post into a TLDR before the first one ended, but they and he are a hoot.  Perhaps over a literal, not virtual, campfire some day, or at a MGTTD, assisted by beer or bourbon or both.

But one tale, post-Army and apropos of your post, comes instantly to mind.  In the mid-90’s, this now-civilian lawyer made the news by swimming in a restaurant shark tank.  No, not on the TV show. 

But thanks for posting that shark link.  I limit my time in the water to showers, but sent that to one of our daughters who loves the Outer Banks.

 Sharks, buddy they can be scary. I saw quite a few of them when I was a youngster surfing and snorkeling the north shore of Oahu. Never worried about them and always thought it was kind of exciting.  Several times there were large groups (school, flock, herd?) of them when I was swimming just off the continental shelf off the east coast USA. Lots of sharks! now that was scary. Twice in Florida a shark has hit me in the legs while I was body surfing. Once a small shark was chasing fish and it hit the outside of my right thigh and scraped some skin off. It was almost like sandpaper. Drew blood. I got out of the water pronto. The other time I was wading out to deeper water and another small shark in pursuit of something, I suppose, hit me in the legs and knocked me over. I got out of the water as fast as I could. Those boys play rough. I saw a few when I was  snorkeling off the sailboat in the Bahamas, but mostly what I saw there were very large barracuda. Lots of very large barracuda.

Hey SS;    That's very interesting.

       I only recently became aware of the shark tracking projects, and was going to copy over a link for ongoing shark tracking taking place off the coast of Nova Scotia, but I realized it's all the same research group.

       Some of the sharks are huge, and you're right, they do big mileage.

       It's a bit disconcerting how close, they'll sometimes hang around shore, river mouths, protected coves, islands etc.

       They seem to like to cruise through the same good fishing areas that the fishermen do.

       Gotta love mother nature
