sachse ignition compatabile dual output coils
« on: November 08, 2021, 06:43:03 AM »
Hi everyone,

hopefully someone out there has the answer....

I'm putting the calvin back on carbs as I spend most of my time at very low throttle openings where Alpha N injection just can't compete.

Have done this in the past keeping the ECU with good results, but this time I'm taking everything out and will be producing spark from a Sachse unit mounted at the front of the crank.

NB Calvin is dual plugged.

anyone know if the (expensive) OEM guzzi dual output coils will work with the Sachse?

And if not, anyone know which coils I need?

Cheers

Hi

Is it a ZDG 3 Unit your using or the Reg/Rec unit with the ZDG 3 in built to it?

I'm asking as I don't know about the later units

The ZDG 3 system uses 2 optical sensors triggered by a disc mounted onto the crank nose, so it has a distinct channel for each cylinder and the cylinder gets the wasted spark on its exhaust stroke not like some of the dangerous units that have the wasted spark triggering when the opposite cylinder requires a spark.

I don't know about the dual output coils, I'm assuming this is to support the dual plugged heads, I can't see why not as the unit has 3 built in ignition curves for dual plugged heads

According to the instruction sheet I have, coil Primary that the unit can support if between 3-8 Ohms, Secondary 4.5-15kOhm.

Plugs should have 5 kOhm resitance (normal for Guzzis)

Personally I'd use a 5 Ohm primary for the coil, I believe that's what is on mine (although it's not dual plugged), Guzzis don't need a 3 Ohm coil and they just produce more heat and more current.

Below is a drop box link with the instructions for the Reg/Rec system and the ZDG3 stand alone

Hi, I don't know if you followed my build last winter but it's still there in the " bike builds/restorations " I had dual plugged my original LMIV many years ago and was running a Dyna III with 3 ohm Dyna dual outlet coils. On the 1400 engine I fitted to the bike last winter I adapted my original Bosch alternator and am running a Sachse ign. along with the same Dyna coils and it has performed flawlessly for 7500 kilometres so far. Most aftermarket ignitions I have used on Harleys have been very specific about how many ohms coils are to be used but Sachse allows any coils from 2 to 5 ohms which is great. It's nice after shelling out money for a new ignition to not have to turn around and buy different coils as well. They also call for 5 ohm resistance in the plug caps and that covers just about every NGK cap made  so no problem there.

great info guys.

Got some dyna coils on order

the primary resistance of the stock coils (the 'square' coils) is 0.9ohms just for reference

Thqnks

Ahh Ok now I know about the coils you're were referring too, single output versions of them are used on my Sporti and HiCam engines.

I've always thought there was something odd about them as the primary resistance is so low, but I've never seen any explanation why

I installed a Sachse crank mounted system on my v50ii and kept the stock coils and they work fine. It has two separate coils.
