OBDSTAR Scan tool
« on: December 12, 2023, 03:11:18 PM »

Has anyone had experience with this OBDSTAR scan tool? It’s a bit on the pricey side, but doing mostly my own maintenance it would pay for itself in a year or two of use on my V85tt.  Would be nice to have a tool that could cycle the ABS pump for brake bleeds, TPS resets, and reading CEL and ALARM SERVICE codes when they come up.  Also claims to reset the maintenance wrench on the dash.   Just want to see how well they work before I take the plunge ….

Hi

Yes, I've got one that I bought a year ago for use on mv MV Agusta. My reasoning for buying it was much the same as yours. I've checked fault codes with it and used it to re-calibrate the exhaust valve which was the principal reason for buying it. It costs a fraction of the price of the "factory" Texa system.

Mine looks the same as your photo, there was a new model released not long after I bought mine which maybe explains the 22% off.

I gave it a look. Seems like it will do what you want? But if I'm reading it right??? You have to pay each year to keep using it after the first year.

Guzzidiag will do just about anything you need, except reset the service icon.

They have a unit for about $100 more that can do other makes including HD and Piagio. HD cable sold separately for about $25. If I do not have to pay each year to use it, might be worth it??

Thanks for the reply Tom.  I’ll have to take a look at the latest version of Guzzi Diag.  Last I checked it didn’t have the ABS pump cycle feature for the V85tt.  I have an E4, if that makes a difference

You/I need to look that up. There was something about not selecting the "bike". Scroll down to?? and there was something like ABS and the brand of it. Then more options appear. Search the posts about Guzzidiag.

Again AFAIK, it will not clear the service icon. REALLY wish it could!!

Buying a scan tool is one of those things that the real value comes when it sits unused in your tool box!! :)  I have never looked at that brand, but being more in the automotive world, I have looked into a lot of the more advanced scan tools, and as said, the fees are normally for updates. You really may never need them in the future depending on what you work on.

Before spending money I would check real good what it does with your bike. Most Guzzi have continental ABS that has different possibility's as the bosch unit used on the 2005-2010 models. One can flush the other nod, that's dependent on the abs unit, not the diagnostics you use. But anyway in Guzzidiag 0.60 the ABS units for all Guzzi's are supported.

Thanks for the reply Paul. I took a look at Guzzidiag 6.0 and didn’t see where the ABS pump could be activated?  I haven’t messed around with Guzzidiag much, and have only been able to find tutorials on downloading/installing it.  Has any made a user guide to become familiar with its features?  I don’t have any interest in messing with the mapping (yet)

I did get one of the Guzzi version units. No real documentation for it except for how to use the unit (adjust backlight, network, ect.), but not on how to use the functions of the unit on a bike.

It will clear the service icon at least on a V7III that uses the E5(?) square connector.

One thing they don't' obviously tell you is that to clear the icon you need another cable not included in the listing, even though it implies that it will clear the icon with what you get in the box.

I bought both cables for the Guzzi for about $50 for the pair. The older flat style and the newer square style.

At least it will do what I really bought it for.

I should get off my butt and buy one of these or the Duonix unit.

If I can find one that doesn't break the bank which can work on all 3 of the current fleet (Duc, and two V7s) and shut out service lights on them and other Guzzis I could at least help out the local guys who need that done too.

What unit did you get?

I bought this unit. The first page is the MFG web site info and it does have much more info than the page you buy it on. The second is the page you buy it on. Worth reading both pages:
https://www.obdstar.com/Products_376.html
https://www.obdstarstore.com/wholesale/obdstar-iscan-gilera-motorcycle-diagnostic-scanner.html

I also had to get two cables. M047 and M048 these work on both types of connectors that are on Guzzi from what I understand. On the MFG site, click the accessories tab to see the cables.

There are a few versions of the unit, this one is for Guzzi only, from what I understand, no way to up grade this unit to do other MFG bikes. There is a unit that either has or can be upgraded for other MFG, but it was out of my price range or I would have bought that one to do my HD as well.

I'm not trying to sell these units. But from what I have read the customer support can be iffy at Duonix, but maybe a bit more technical. OBDstar seems to be helpful enough except when you have a technical question, then they were a bit lacking. Maybe I was just dealing with a sales person and never got to a true tech support?

I need to sit down and read the V7III manual where it talks about using Guzzi's dealer tool. It may give more insight as to what the functions of the OBDstar unit does.

There are SOME things that this unit might do that can MAYBE only be undone by a dealer. Wish there was more documentation included with the unit.

I just bought one of these and am trying to figure out how to use it.

Can I ask what you must do to clear the icon, and what you meant by 'another cable'...
I have a '24 Mandello..
Thanks!

Use the link in Reply #13 to go to the MFG. web site. Go to accessories and you will see the two cables I listed. For your Mandello, you would likely only need the square cable. But if you think you might work on other models, then get both cables.

It's not too hard. I don't have my unit here to give you step by step directions because I always have to look for the section to clear the icon. I seem to remember it's under "special functions" or the like.

If you need a step by step, I should be able to get to it in about a week.

Just a caution. As I had mentioned some things may not be able to undone except by a dealer. So if your unsure of what a function does, don't do it.

BTW: I did go through the V7III manual to see if there was any good info using the PADS system. The manual didn't really have anything like I was looking for.

For instance, right next to the button to clear the wrench. There is a button to reset the mileage. I think????????? this may change the wrench from the first service miles to the longer normal service mile. I need to find a guinea pig.
