RI/CT trail riders: Pachaug & Arcadia
« on: January 01, 2022, 11:13:16 AM »
Hello all,

Our V85TTs are a bit big for trail riding and am looking at KLX 230, Versys 300-x, TW 200/XT250 type bikes to do some off road riding in areas that require bikes be plated and reg.

For those in this area, have any of you ridden in Pachaug which I know is a huge state forest or the smaller Arcadia in RI-I know it has side trails as Ive gone down "Blitzkreig Trail" on all my other bikes but didnt want to take 500+lb bikes down wet muddy single track trails.

Thanks and HNY!

Over on ADV. I rode Pachaug once when I had my XT350,

The Trans Mass trail would be fun on the Guzzi.

From this fall on the Trans Mass

I can tell you that most of the trails in Arcadia management area are off limits to motorized vehicles. Hikers, horses, and mountain bikes only.
There are some dirt roads in Arcadia that are open to motorized vehicles, but they are not challenging in any way, just flat wide maintained dirt roads.
All the trails that are fun in a dirt bike in RI are either private land or state owned and off limits to motorized vehicles.
So with the exception of organized rides ( google Rhody rovers, or NETRA), nothing like the Pachaug in RI.

I wish the RI would license some some state owned land for motorized recreation and have a tag system to pay for it,

Isn’t that how it works in Mass and CT? You pay a fee and get a sticker to ride in the designated areas?

At Pachaug you just need a plated bike in Mass you need a permit, sticker. In Ct there is also the Thomaston Dam where you can ride in season.

Thanks for the replies, I took a ride thru parts of Pachaug and 1 section is basically a dirt road which our bikes could handle, I know there are 58 miles of trails and some are single track with rocks and ruts which I wouldnt want to take a 500lb bike on.

When I was a kid, the RI sand dunes "big river" was open until 2 bikers crashed and it was closed. I think it was opened later with a permit from DEM but they later closed.

RI officially has no legal place to ride off road, amazing for a state that was at one time 70-80% woodland areas.

There are power lines that I see people ride but they are illegal. Looks like itll be Pachaug

Yep, the dunes are closed to motorized recreation.
My GF and I walked there a few times this Summer. What a shame because with proper supervision, that area would be awesome fun.

There were some tire marks around from some folks who disregard the rules, but not many. A few people had radio controlled trucks playing  in the sand one day when we were there.

I’ve done the power lines from rt 44 in Smithfield/Greenville all the way to Woonsocket. Great fun, but if you get caught not so much.

RI is always crying about $$ - they should open some trails and monetize it. Keep some for the mountain bikes and horses, and a few for motorized vehicles with pay for it tags. IDK, maybe it’s not so simple. Lawsuits and all -
Don’t get me started on a personal responsibility rant …. LOL..

Taken on one of the Pachaug trails. I had a part time job in the summer and used to cut through Pachaug as part of my commute home. Sometimes it was quite sticky!
