Died at 94. An actor I always enjoyed in whatever role he played.

Not just a great actor, he was a proud American.
Found this:
He grew up in the Bahamas but moved to America when he was 15, and served in the Second World War as a teenager after lying about his age.

Remember seeing him at the Nassau airport around 1967. He was very approachable, and greeted my 7 year old sister. She still remembers that meeting.

A fine actor. RIP.

.....
plus I've just discovered via  the news here he was Kighted by the Queen in 1974.

I didn't know other nationals could be honoured in that way

Still he was worthy of it

"Guess who's coming for dinner", was the movie I immediately thought of.

He broke some Hollywood barriers in the 60’s.
I think one of his best movies was “To Sir With Love” and it was followed with the beauty song on the same title.

One of my favorites, seemed to be a great person and gentleman.  Loved his movies; he was selective with the movies he acted in.  I showed on the movies he starred in.
God bless you Sidney and RIP  You will be missed...

Interesting, "the less said the better" but you threw it out there anyway.

RIP Mr Poitier. A class act and actor. Just watched a bit on his life and interview with some CBS talking head. I always enjoyed his movies, but didn't know he also directed great movies like "Stir Crazy" . My favorite movie was the jailbrak movie "the Defiant ones"

One interesting part of his life was when he was sent to America to get out of the way of 'bad influences' in the Bahamas, a co worker saw him looking at a newspaper, and when asked what was happening, Poitier said "I dont know, I cant read"  the co worker sat with him every evening teaching him to read. Amazing what a simple act of kindness and brotherhood can produce. Reminder to us all to look around and see where we can help, even in the most basic of things......
