CAN Code Error?
« on: February 19, 2023, 02:26:22 PM »

2014 California 1400. Haven’t rode in 2-3 months. Tried to take it for a ride today, turned the key on and got nothing. First thought was dead battery, doesn’t seem like it though, always on a tender. I hooked up to the charger and still got nothing, battery was at 90% also. The lights on the gauge finally flickered and I noticed the “CAN ERROR CODE” on the screen. I started checking fuses, but everything I could easily access looked good. When I turn the key on the lights all flash but then go out immediately, the indicator lights all flash then go out as well just leaving the error code. Doesn’t cycle the fuel pump or anything else that signals it wants to start. Any ideas of what to check? I hope the computer didn’t die from sitting. This bike was perfectly running 3 months ago and always stored in a good garage with good gas and on the tender.

I would try a reset of the can bus system. Disconnect the positive and negative cables from the battery, All of them if there is more than one.
Connect the cables together for 10 to 15 seconds and then reattach to the battery where they came from. My $.02

It would be helpful to check  for any stored error codes. You need a computer and the cable to connect to the bike, along with a program like guzzidiag.  The canbus error usually indicates an interruption in the connection between the dash and the ecu. In this case ,I would strongly suspect a weak or shorted battery. You could try disconnecting the battery and jumping with  a known good battery in its place.

Do an actual load test on the battery. I'll bet it's dead.

I’m going to try a fresh battery. I noticed I couldn’t get that code to flash on the dash unless it was hooked to a charger. Battery was the original oem battery and probably just won’t hold a charge after 8 or so years, it had a good run. Thanks to all replies.

Where do you get that battery at  90% ? That would be around 11.5volts.. not good.

Eight or so years ago? That battery should have been recycled years ago. You have opened yourself to being stranded on the side of the road. Replace it batteries are cheap in the overall scheme of things.

I have seen tenders left on all the time kill multiple batteries.

Battery Tender killed another battery most likely.

New battery did the trick. Held the battery wires together for 15 seconds before installing the battery to do the hard reset. Fired right up. I’m getting a service message and the red triangle stays on now though. I put the service code 34534 in and thought I cleared it. But I can’t get the service message and the triangle to go away. How do I check what the error code is?
