Hello! Long time no post -- Just bought 68 V700!
« on: March 31, 2022, 06:50:19 PM »
Hi!

Some of you long-time posters might remember me, it's been about FIVE YEARS since my last post! I'be been running around with Matchless, Velocette, Vespa and Royal Enfield Bikes...  So I have some serious Whitworth Tool Porn in my shop now!

I've been out of Guzzis for awhile, although after starting the MGNOC Facebook page, We now have more than 12,000 members,  so I've got that going for me and some very dedicated monitors and helpers.  Great people one and all.

The reason I'm posting again, is I'm about to take delivery of a wonderful '68 V700 in very, very nice condition, lots of receipts, the upgrades you want to see, etc.  The only thing it needs is that damned camshaft plug leak fixed.

I've done one in 2008, so I'm  a little rusty.  I am one of those guys that "while you're in there" you might as well fix other stuff.  So,  What other stuff is worth fixing and/or replacing so I can just ride this bike like I stole it for the next few years?

How sure are you it's that "damned camshaft plug"? In my experience, that's the least likely thing on the back of the engine to leak.

I'm not sure.

The last time I was into one,  That's what I found,  and kinda what I'm thinking -- I know the rear crankshaft seal is an issue, too. I want to get in there and make it something that I don't have to think about ever again.

Glad your back.

If really going in consider the clutch hub with 4mm splines, this package looks like a really good deal.

That hub doesn't work on a 4 spd. transmission. There are 4 mm splined hubs for 4 spds. available though.

Don’t fix it if it’s not broken…

What is making you believe things aren’t working right?

Rear main would be dropping a lot of oil, cam plug you can only see it leaking if your looking at it

Drive it a few times to see what’s happening

Congratulations awesome looking bike i love them

Welcome back, Dan.. stick your finger in it and have a sniff.  Motor oil or gear lube?
Like everyone says, reliable as a hammer, easy to live with except that stopping thing.

Never found the stopping thing to be an issue after Mark Ethridge showed me how to make the brakes work.  Pretty much stops like my two Matchless.  I lveave a lot of room.

Mine's on it's way. I'm headed to the UK to sniff around for a Square 4.  It will be here in a month and we'll get started.  Just put up a 20x24 foot shop to crank out some awesome bikes.

Crazy!  It was not three days ago that I asked myself "I wonder what Mr. Gurovich is up to these days?", and I went to check out your blog for the first time in years!  Now, here you are...

Must have felt a disturbance in the force when you decided to buy that beautiful V700.  Welcome back!

Cheers,

Thanks for the kind words -- the Blog is next.  The last 8 years have had lots of travel, some family turmoil, lots of work, and I've moved to a nice rural town north of Detroit.  Working from home now for two years,  getting everything stabilized.  Time to write again and work on bikes,  play with my dogs, my family and the MGB I'm putting back together.
