Hi Muzz, I was hoping you would notice my post. I read most, if not all your gear box posts on here, as well as Nick Webb's writeup.
I finally received the Newfren clutch plate and it fits on the shaft. Now I am thinking of a way to attach it to a spare 1/2" ratchet socket
so I can turn the shaft while holding the nut as you describe. I should be able to hack a 36mm wrench for that.
The clutch plate is new, so I am trying not to spoil it.
The spline nut is thin indeed. In fact the to lip that gets punched broke off. So I am waiting for a new nut from Italy.

I also broke the punch lip on the internal 22mm nut for the output shaft, but I have a few of those.
While doing this work (
https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=102352.msg1811202#msg1811202), I realized there has to be a way to service the gear box
without removing the spline shaft from the clutch housing. It seems that it is removed only to use it to hold the internal output shaft.
My dilemma now is how to go about tightening both nuts.
I read a few posts debating whether to use a torque wrench or just put some thread lock and hit it with an impact wrench.
I was able to undo both nuts with my impact wrench, so if I can't figure out a way to use the torque wrench, I might switch to the impact.
I think I will attach the gear box to the swing arm and rear tire. Have someone sit on the tire while I torque the nut.
Maybe I'll make something to lock the internal gear to the gear box housing.
