Having mostly finished up the Cali Stone project I've now set about other smaller things on the bike. One thing I noticed from the day I got it was the ITI odo and trip were both turning in ways that demonstrated catching and/or gear cog missing. Like the previous '04 Stone I used to own, I just basically thought it was on the way out. Regardless, since most other things on the bike are now done, I decided this past weekend to pop open the odo and have a gander inside. What I found surprised me. I didn't find any gears ground, even the plastic gears' teeth seemed mostly fine. What I did discover was gobs of dried dirt/grease?/gunk all over every single gear inside. And it wasn't "soft" gobs like fresh grease, more like gum. Either someone had previously greased it or maybe ITI gave them some lube from the factory and what I found was just aged and picked up crap over the years? Either way, the stuff was basically gunk now and somewhat hard with road grime or just years of dust and so forth mixed in. I cleaned it all up rather handsomely. I was greatly proud of myself because it looked so good inside. I used a plastic safe lube on everything and put it back together, glueing the face back on then installed on the bike. It was late in the day and I didn't bother checking to see if it worked fine. Flash forward to yesterday morning I take off for work, first ride. I immediately notice the speedo is flailing rapidly all over the place. But I also notice that the odo and trip meter are now turning much more smoothly and in better sync. Unfortunately, about 6 miles later the entire thing stops working, no odo, no trip, no speedo. Last night I took it apart and discovered the cable broke about 6-8 inches down from entering the odo. This actually made me rather happy because I greatly feared the craziness I was witnessing on the speedo was grounding plastic inside - at least I know it's the cable. My question here is this. Why did it break? When I removed the speedo I didn't change the cable's location in any way that I recall; in fact, I just left it dangling there where I unscrewed it. Just curious because I have a new cable on the way and don't want to repeat this process. In the next day or so I'll lift the tank and check the cable pathway to look for, I guess?, binds, twists, and such?
