yamaha turn off after 10 seconds?
« on: May 21, 2022, 08:44:56 AM »
Hey guys,

I just did some maintenance on an outboard Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke that I hadn't used in about a year. I replaced the impeller, and the spark plugs, and i cleaned the carburater, (incl the needle valve). Now my motor starts easily but while running a lot of fuel is getting in the water, I've checked for loose tubes but nothing seems to be leaking. I think the fuel is coming from the exhaust. After about 10 to 15 seconds of running in neutral, the motor shuts off, and won't start again. After waiting for an hour or more, the motor will start again and do the same thing. I think the engine may be getting too much fuel. But the gas handle connected to the throttle cable inside the motor can't be pushed in any further.

Any advice?

Sounds like the float needle valve may be sticking open or mal-adjusted.

x3 on needle/float. sometimes a good rap or two on the side of carb with the end of a screwdriver hit with something is enough to jostle it free, otherwise u r stuck r+r the carb again.
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!
