1100 IE Sport Tyre recomendations
« on: July 19, 2022, 04:18:19 AM »
OK, I've done the forum search, but not found a suitable 2022 answer. I need the Sport re-shod, it's running tyres that were made in 2009 and they are harder than well.......... anything hard really.
I have the Michelin Road 6's on my Multistrada and am very happy with them. I'll be riding the Sport a bit harder for sure so just wondering about profile and other tyre recommendations. Maybe something a bit more sport orientated than the "Road". Forks have been raised in the Yoke.....

I just installed a set of Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart IVs on mine, but they haven't left the driveway yet for an impression.

I run the 2 & 3 versions on my V11 Sport and Ducati 939 Supersport.  They last, handle and cheaper <Guzzi content on the last point>

I ride about 8k miles a year, so I'm not going to skimp on quality or throw money away either.   :police:

Use the bridgestone sport touring tyres, the sport touring tyres have improved enough to cope with anything a sport might be capable of.

I’m not up to speed on the characteristics of current tires on the 1100 Sport and these bikes are very sensitive to front tire profile, but would add that it’s not necessary to fit the stock 70-series rear tire.  A 60-series was used on the RS and there are a lot more 160/60-17 rear tires available than 70-series, and a wider variety of front tires available that match a 60-series rear.  I believe the only reason they used a 70-series rear from the factory was to differentiate the Sport from the RS and make the RS seem more sporty by comparison.

Along the same lines, with any tires I used on my 1100 Sport the steering was better and more neutral with the fork legs flush with the top triple clamp.  Raising them made the bike fall into turns at max lean and reduced cornering clearance.  I rode my bike to the limits of the tires and experimented a lot at the time.  At that time SC2 compound (track day compound) Pirellis were very good, but in recent years I’ve been very disappointed in anything from Pirelli, after 1000 miles or so they’ve wrecked the handling of anything I’ve tried them on. Current Dunlops seem better, more neutral, for older Italian sport bikes that need a round profile front tire, not a pointy tire that makes the bike feel like it’s balanced on the head of a pin.

It is amazing how much you can screw up the handling of an 1100 Sport with the wrong front tire.

The first set of tires I put on were Bridgestone BT30? I think- sport touring, and they were very competent, comfortable, and lasted ~7000 miles. The front was a bit short on feedback but wore all the way past the wear bars on the cornering sides without giving up feel or traction. If I was going on another 10k tour I'd look to them.

Thanks for the details, I am keen to move to the lower profile on the rear, but am worried about what to put on the front..........
I wouldn't really trust anything the deal tells me as they probably would be guessing for the tyre match. Any recommendations? I have the IE so it recommends 160/60 it's a 17" rear. I have had good experiences with Michelins on my Ducatis, but this is my first Guzzi.
