v50 Courthouse Commuter closure
« on: August 30, 2022, 07:22:35 PM »
Got the v50 back on the road just in time for commuting to the big city for jury duty.
The first time I have been called to serve. I live about fifteen minutes north of Portland Me. and the parking situation there stinks . I am glad they have a couple of scooter ,bicycle or motorcycle specific spaces right across from the court house. Was almost late for reporting as I had three different people walking by wanting to know what kind of bike I had. Anyone else here had to do jury service? Only took a couple of hours to fill out all the question pages and now waiting to hear back. Hope this doesn't drag toooo long.

I’ve been called to jury duty three times here in Spartanburg county since the early 90’s.  For me, it was lots of hurry up & wait.  We were basically told how intimidating our simple presence can to a litigant and their attorney, how important our participation was and sincerely thanked by the court.

During those three calls to jury duty, iirc I was selected for three juries in total but only heard one case argued in part before one of the parties decided to settle. The others settled before we even went into the court room.  The rest of those three weeks was spent sitting & waiting.  Not much excitement of any kind.

Hope your week goes well.  At least you’ve got the V50 running to make the trip more enjoyable.

Within the last 3 years, I got notices to respond for the jury pool call-up.  The last one was about a week ago.  From the district court on the other side of the island 90 miles away.  The lists of exemptions showed being more than 70 miles away.  I checked that box.  I also answered the questions.  Involved in a case court.  Landlord....yes on numerous times.  Close friend or relatives in law enforcement....yes.  Occupation....Dept. of Labor  contracted for employments services to the Depart. of Public Safety.  For all the reasons, I don't think I'll be in the general call-up.

^^^^ yes.
Been called to jury duty a number of times. Have all been civil cases. Because of my profession, I know and have done business with many attorneys. Knowing any of 'em on a case gets you excused.

Well now it's just waiting to here back. If called it will be the week of September 6th.  The only issue they may have with me is that I know one of the lawyers on one of the two cases they brought up. Both were medical malpractice cases.  The lawyer is a customer of mine, and a neighbor. Maybe you will just get assigned to a different case, I don't know. Here in Maine you can be called to serve only three times total. This is my first.  Once your 80 years old you can opt out. Sure hope the case isn't motorcycle related!
Here's another v50 pic to keep Kev happy  The perfect little bike for urban duty.
 Thanks for sharing your experience's.

Called once.  Called downstairs from the jury room one time but wasn't selected.  They made me stay the entire week and this was before smartphones.

The positive was this was the early days of digital photography, and a retired physicist / amateur digital photography expert spent the entire week sharing his knowledge with me.

Yesterday.  I got a notice to appear for jury duty.     I'm going to request a deferment not an exemption.     Hopefully the Judge will approve so I can take a vacation in the time window that I'm looking at.

I have to show unless I can get a deferment.  Senior, state employee, cleared to work in the prison system.  Traffic (mine), Landlord (evictions) with friends and family in law enforcement.  I know a lot of the court house staff from work related issues.  Depending on the case civil/criminal, they don't want me either.     (no politics)

Fortunately, I don't mind being on a jury.  The courthouse moved and the commute is 8 miles from the house.  $30 per day and mileage plus my state salary.  :thumb:  Time out of the office which forces my supervisor to figure out a solution to the understaffing excuse for not granting my vacation.

Well just finish the second day of jury selection :violent1: 8;30 to 5:00 with a one hour lunch break. Chucks right, if you think some motorcycle seats are uncomfortable try 8 hours on a hard oak slab. I got selected and then excused so I'll get to go back later this week and do it all again. I'm bringing my Airhawk with me next time . Just hope it doesn't suffer a blowout during a quite moment.

My wife was in the jury pool for the Boston Marathon case.  She was so nervous I had to drive her to Boston and wait in the Courthouse.  I told her to cry, which she was doing anyway.  The judge excused her.

My daughter was in college in Boston at that time and was a race volunteer. Mile 24, too close for comfort.  I  still remember the helpless feeling hearing about it on the radio while at work. We didn't know for a couple hours if she was ok.

After two long days this past week in the courthouse for multiple jury selections, I was eventually selected to serve on a medical malpractice case. I was then rejected because two of my immediate family members are in the medical field. Just got confirmation that my jury duty is complete . I can't be called again for five years, Looks like me and the V50 are off the hook. I am relieved as the judge  told the final jury selects to plan on two weeks of service. Perhaps my being self employed was a consideration also. Was interesting to see how the whole process works and was good to see the lengths they go to, to make sure a fair and impartial jury is ultimately selected for each case.

I have been called 3 times in the last 22 years. The first was a criminal case, and the judge let me go on the last day of the jury selection period. The second case was also criminal, but the jury selection was done after the second day, and I was excused again. I was just picked to serve again Sep 12, bust was notified yesterday that I was no longer needed. In 2 years, when I turn 70, I will not be picked again in my county here in Florida.

I consider it an honor to serve as a juror, as it is a crucial part of the judicial process, in spite of the gruesome and long sessions to be endured in the court room. Every defendant deserves his/her day in court, as well as an impartial hearing by people with no personal interest in the case.

The Courts gave me a total pass.  I did request a different date.  Maybe it was a decent "Excuse" letter.     I did state that the last week of the vacation was for volunteering at the Ironman World Championships.  Big influx of money into the local economy.  2 days driving a camera man around and 3 days on a forklift working in the warehouse with supplies.

I served on two Los Angeles juries in 1978 and commuted on my 1975 850-T.  Commuting on that Guzzi was the high point of my jury duty.

Now, in my ninth decade, I can avoid jury duty quite easily and I do.  I can think of more enjoyable rides on the '04 Breva 750.

In Hawaii, age 80 is an recognized excuse.  I got this is after submitting my "excuse" letter.  "Thank you for sending your letter regarding Jury duty.  You have been excused and permanently disqualified from Jury Summons."  I guess they don't want mid-management that works for the State employment services.     That doesn't take into account the work that I have done within the prison system and friends/relatives in law enforcement or law suits.  (landlord related)
