twice in the last 10 months 40 amp fuse blows
« on: November 06, 2022, 05:41:25 PM »
All, an electrical question on a 2014 1400 touring. Twice in the last 10 months or so I've had a 40 amp fuse to blow, generator stops charging battery. The first time it happened I thought the original factory battery was toast so I purchased a new battery etc. discovered the blown fuse. At the time I didn't think much about it. A couple of weeks ago that dreaded red triangle came on, so I watched the battery go from 12.1 volts to 8 trying to make it home. I didn't. anybody have some thoughts? secondly I mainly ride during the day so I use the daylight lamps in the headlamp instead of all the lights on. I've always done that unless I get caught out in the rain or if I do find myself out after dark. This happened after about an hour of using all the lights for about 50 miles or so. Don't know if thats got anything to do with it or not. Just my habit. here some photos...

The way the one post is melted off looks like it could be a bad contact on the socket for the fuse.  Just one thought.  Good luck finding the problem.

I would agree , looks like arcing going on in the fuse connection. some conductive paste may solve the problem if the fuse socket isn't melted . I use this stuff on marine connections.

I agree as well, we used to have that problem with the charging fuse on VII Sports

Lotta heat there.

I'm thinking if just the fuse blew, the plastic wouldn't be melted.
Had a similar problem on my old XS750 - the solder melted on the
end of the fuse, and the problem was definitely a bad connection.

Was there something under the seat pressing on the fuse box area?
There's only that rubber "fuse box" cover on my 2017 Cali Touring, and it would NOT take much
for something to press on the fuse and bend/break the socket.

I have the Corbin seat connection in that area, too  - which is even a
wee bit fussier to make sure that everything is tucked away appropriately
before putting the saddle back on.

Can't find it but get with your dealer there was an MG thecnical bulletin on this, there was connecter somewhere under the tank that had to be clipped to prevent this from happening.

If nothing else Phil Waters at Clevelandmoto has knowledge of it, heard him talk about it on a recent padcasat.

Dealers was supposed to have done it before delivering.

found this on the GT forum, seems the top wire of the two wire alternator connector is to be disconnected. Dealers were supposed to perform this mod before delivery. Guess I'll be lifting the tank to have a look.

That is what I thought was happening, but not all dealers look at anything they get or do anything about the bulletins. I fixed a bunch before bikes went out. AND that wire was still hooked up on 16 models that I looked at. So don't think yours is fine.

It was discussed here too but you would have to search for it.
