79 years old, glad I got to see him, too bad Johnny Depp had to show up.

Bummer.  I just saw him in November at the Chicago Theater, with Johnny Depp.  He was really good, never been into his sound, and really didn't know a lot about him other  than he was a guitar super star.  He was really good, I get why he was so regareded.  Johnny Depp, is just a hack on the guitar, but he is a pretty good entertainer, and had decent vocals.

But the point is, He was great!

Back in the 70’s I played Blow by Blow until the vinyl wore out. Truly Great!
I’ll be binge playing him on Spotify all day tomorrow.

I didn’t know who he was when I bought “wired”. He left a lasting impression, and I’ll never forget him. So glad there are so many performances captured on YouTube to enjoy until I pass.

One of the 'Holy Trinity' of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton & Jimmy Page and undoubtedly the greatest guitar player ever.

Jeff Beck is among my top 5 guitarists of all time and I was stunned to hear the same news of his passing. I had the privilege of seeing Jeff perform several times thru the years. I have just about everything recording released to date and most enjoyed his early solo work including my faves:

Truth, Beck-Ola, Blow by Blow and Wired. I recall hearing Wired for the first time at my older cousin's home and was blown away. That same cousin opened up my mind to many other greats including The Mahavishnu Orchestra.

For those not familiar with Jeff's playing please take the time to watch one of the best filmed footage IMHO.

I will sadly miss Jeck but his music will live on forever!

Flower King,

Thanks for posting the YT link, an incredible performance.

One of the fascinating things about Jeff Beck, was his innate ability, to slip from one genre of playing, to another. Jazz, slipping into full on Blues, to Rock and seamlessly and effortlessly, back to Jazz. A peerless talent that we’ve lost way too early.

I don’t know if anyone that plays using his technique. The way he uses that whammy bar and volume knob is definitely unique. I believe he was a genuinely modest and “nice” person, which are rare traits in someone with his talent. I hope the saying about 3’s doesn’t come to pass.

Did he EVER use a pick? Not in any of the videos I’ve been watching.

I have seen him use a pick when playing his Les Paul, very rare.  As a guitar player, I can tell you the tone he got out of his Strat, oftentimes plugged directly into his amp with no pedals is the work of a magician.  His use of the whammy bar to bend up to or down to a note then create a whimsical vibrato.  Hidden is his use of the volume knob, each note had its own distinctive attack and phrasing.  In interviews, he was generous to those around him, sought out other superb players, and let them shine. Vince Gill tells a story of seeing him for the first time at an Eric Clapton Crossroads festival.  All the seats on the stage were filled with other guitarist on the bill, then there was Jeff, solo on stage who we were all watching.  I hate when people rank guitar players or any musicians.  He was and will always be a musicians musician. An original, unique voice of his and future generations.  I think of Django, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Hedrix, SRV, like Jeff they left a catalog of work behind that you knew was uniquely their own.

YES,  if I recall Beck didn't stop using a pick till the 80's. Here is some pick action!

I read that his "thumbs" were insured for $10m

I think there was some mention in his documentary (somewhere above) about that.  I saw it on cable, it's worth watching.
