Unexpected Arizona trip
« on: April 23, 2023, 04:29:03 PM »
When I was down in the Hill Country riding the Three Sisters I got an unexpected call from work to go to Phoenix, Arizona for a conference.  I had just finished FM 337.

Ok, sure.  So I went north, got on I-10, and dropped the hammer.  Conference ended mid-day Friday, so I took 60 east to Claypool, then 188 past Teddy Roosevelt lake and dam.  I liked 188.

Then 87 through Tonto National Forest to Winslow.  87 was also nice, but there was still a fair amount of snow at the higher elevations.

And yes.  I stood on the corner.  Apparently that’s what people do here.

I met Brian the cop in Winslow. No ticket, he just wanted to chat about my bitchin’ green Kawasaki.

Next day I took the Devil’s Highway, 191, south from Springerville to Three Way.

Holy Cow.  I highly, highly recommend 191. Fantastic road and scenery.

Then the huge open pit copper mine in Morenci.  Photos do not capture the vastness of this operation.

Now riding back through Texas at home.  Would like to rest at the rest stops but resting is prohibited.

Refreshed my memory of when I rode over many of those roads. Thanks.

Oh, I totally love my new bike!!!   Her name is Midori.  Japanese for green.  We go everywhere together.

The route and roads you traveled on are some of the best in Arizona!  Good for you!   :thumb:

LOVE that Kawasaki, by the way! :boozing:  How is it as a sport touring bike?

If you came through Sedona, I would have bought you a coffee or beer or whatever...

Next time head over to Silver city NM. Great ridding around there to, and a lot nicer than 10.

You're hard core, man.   :bike-037:

I'd sure like to run US-191, AZ-78, and US-180, one of these days.

I was on US191 Saturday, South to North. That mine sure is big. I thought Clifton, on the South end, was a neat little town .

Yep, just like most things we enjoy.
You can plot and plan and when it comes to you, it’s not as exciting because you feel “ entitled” after all the pre planning you did..
But when the opportunity presents itself from out of nowhere, it’s so much better.
This applies to bike trips also…

Great roads Esquire...bet you wore both sides of the tires down nicely on those highways!  Sounds like you've had a nice mix of business and pleasure.  Hammer down!
