Battery Cable Layout Help
« on: May 03, 2023, 08:13:01 AM »
Hi fellas,
I haven't ridden my 2008 Norge for a little over two years.
I'm getting it ready to ride again this season and I removed the battery back when I put it in storage.
Now I'm putting a new battery in it and I can't remember for sure what ring terminal cable goes where.
According to the wire schematic on This Old Tractor there is just one cable going to the neg. post on the battery, the neg. box style end terminal for sure but it seems to me there was a ring style end terminal too?
Or do both ring style cables go to positive along with the positive box style terminal so 3 cables on the positive post and one cable on the negative?

Thanks for any help,
Gerry

I don't remember any ring terminals when they were new. Could be 1 positive & 1 negative for wires to charge battery on a charger plug. I would follow wires & see where they go.

Thanks for the reply Steve.
I'm not including the ring terminals attached to the SAE battery tender plug.
I should add that my bike has ABS, but I think most 2008 Norge's do.
I have two "box" style terminals and those I am sure go to the positive and the negative posts on the battery.
There is also a group of wires that are connected to a ring terminal that are part of a group of wires connected to the fuse blocks.
I'm sure this group goes to the positive post as well.
I also have another ring terminal wire that seems to lead to the ABS?  I'm not sure if this goes to the neg. or pos. post on the battery.
I guess to make it simpler, is there two cables connected to the negative post on the battery?

If you have an ohmmeter, attach one lead to the engine case and then check all the leads one at a time. The ones with 0 resistance will be ground.

My 07 Norge has two on each post. The big copper connector and then a ring connector with thick black insulation on the negative, it runs down the left side behind the side panel, on the positive side there is the same kind of thick insulated ring connector but it shows red under the black insulation. Disregard the other ring terminals in my fingers.

Your cables look like mine, I marked them on your photo.

Yes, thank you, you gave me exactly what I needed, much appreciated.
after hooking every thing back up I had to clean the terminals and the fuse blocks with some deoxit as I was not getting good voltage to the battery from the alternator.
Dash was telling me less than 10 volts and multimeter was less the 11 volts!
Got everything cleaned and now have 12.8 to 13.1 volts on the dash.
Took it for a ride and the front ABS sensor must of went out as I have no speedo, odo and red light with the SERVICE text at the bottom of the display, grrr
Don't let your bike sit in a damp garage for two years!
Sensor is on back order at Harpers and AF1 double grrr!
Thanks again everyone!
