Upgraded side stand fitted to my LM2

During the rebuild I carried out about 3 years ago, I left the oem side stand off as I considered it too unsafe to fit.
I bought a Triumph side stand not long after, but it's taken me until now to get my arse in gear and modify the mounting bracket and fit it.
The finished item, fitted and ready to go.









Finally for the first time since the rebuilt the old girl's leaning on a side stand.

I did this fix to my T3 many moons ago and it's one of the best mods one can do.

Also - do you not run the valve cover breathers? I can see them fitted on either front (1st pic) or rear (3rd pic) of the cylinder

I cut the original side stand bracket in half, using the upper half and fabricating a lower half to take the new side stand. It then needed welding into precisely the right place with a slight lateral angle on it so the stand sits nice and tight when retracted. Although the oem bracket is 8mm thick, the lower fabrication I made is 10mm thick.

Yes, I've removed the valve cover breathers, blanked the valve cover holes and swapped the covers so the blanks are facing rearwards.
I also blanked the pipe inputs into the breather valve whilst retaining the crank breather.
Main reason is the pipes were forever filling with mayo, even on long runs and I could see no obvious reason to keep them in place.
I don't believe they dissipate any 'over pressure' in the heads and I didn't want any of that crap being recycled back into the engine..
Since carrying out this mod I've had no problems.

After years of putting up with the lame side stand on the T, decided to finally try a fix. So I cut out a crescent shaped "foot" out of 1/4" steel plate and welded it to the bottom end of the stand. While not a perfect fix, at least it doesn't tip over on our all too common gravel parking areas. Pictures here:

I put the side stand assembly from a 1000S on my 850T. Worked fine except you had to get off and hold it extended with your foot while leaning it down. At least there was no chance it would, it an inattentive moment, remain extended riding away. Also put a 3/8" Delrin pad on the bottom of the foot for a lesser lean angle.

I fabricated a new bottom half of the mounting bracket and positioned the top spring spigot so the side stand doesnt auto retract. The spigot was made long enough so the spring doesnt foul the pivot nut when the stand retracts. I bought a new spring as the oem spring set up wont work with this mod.

  Two months into new ownership of my Le Mans 2 , while in Laconia,New Hampshire,  I stopped to help a guy
having trouble with his bike at a gas station and not 10 steps away from my bike when I heard this awful crunch !
Broken top fairing, cracked lower fairing and the clip-on deep into the gas tank . I too have a much different side stand arrangement ! To this day , I wonder how such a valuable motorcycle could of had an idiot design that side stand.

I put one on my T3. I found getting off to extend the stand, especially when trying to hit a pad when parking in gravel, almost ruined my Black Hills vacation. I don't think I could have coped with a 3/8" pad added to the bottom, given the lean angle to the right and the dicey parking situations out there.

When I got back I changed to a new-style bracket that has two spring retaining pegs, and mounted the springs so the stand stays either extended or retracted depending on where you leave it. This makes things much easier all around.
