Last weekend my good friend and long distance riding buddy, Gary Schweers passed from heart failure.
Gary and I scoured the Pacific Northwest and along with Cookie, made it out to the west Virginia National in 2005.
I was talking to his wife ,Pat, on the phone last night and told her that I was on a ride Gary and I took several times. We made it to Luap's thing in SW Missouri at least twice and today I am on my way to the thing in SE Kansas. Almost the same trip, same time of the year.
All of us in Washington and Oregon miss him already.
Now a funny story involving Gary.
In 2007, he and I were on our way to Luap's thing.
In was cold and every mountain pass in Montana was spitting g snow. That afternoon, we caught horrific rain from the tornado that wiped out Greenburg KS.2007 it was.
I shall go thru Greenburg tomorrow.
Anyway, on our 3rd day, in the afternoon, we stopped for fuel in Broken Bow NB.
The lady at the gas station asked where we were from.
Seattle
Were you on I-90 in Montana yesterday morning?
Yes.
She says: My husband is a longhaul trucker. He called me last night and said he saw two motorbikes eastbound on I-90 in a snowstorm. 'Those were some tough bikers' he said.
Just wait until tonight when I tell him YOU WERE HERE!
She was very excited like we were minor celebrities in her mind.
Gary and I told that story for many years.
Godspeed, Gary Schweers!
