V7 2013 compatibility with V7ii 2016
« on: July 04, 2023, 11:16:49 AM »
I am so freshly retired that I am still living on vacation leave. My 2013 V7 needs the clutch replaced. And from what I'm reading here probably a whole lot more. It is presently the only bike in the stable. I am thinking of getting a second machine so the V7 can be a long term project without me feeling any urgency due to lackaride-itis. Two options in mind  A V7ii or a BMW 1200rt.
I lean toward the V7 because I am pretty familiar with the machine and I like the 100 pounds lower weight.  (and Price ... Guzzi is a few grand cheaper.)
Are basic maintenance parts that I have on hand (air/oil filters etc) going to be the same or is the motor completely different?
Second question; if this is going to be a full teardown, and I expect to order a grand or more in parts, what is the list you'd put forward? Many thanks.

It is not often I come across people with the same kind of unusual bike considerations  The BMW R1200RT is actually about 190 lb heavier than the V7 wet. The V7 is a basic motorcycle like those we rode in the 70s, the R1200RT was (arguably?) the best touring bike of its day, almost as luxury as a fine car.

The V7 and V7ii share both air and oil filter AFAIK.

I can relate to the fear of being without a working bike - that's why I bought the V9 a month ago - and fully condone acquiring a second bike. But why would you want to perform a full teardown? Has it done an unusually amount of miles, or is it on poor condition?

The air filter (AP8104924) is on small blocks (including the current E5 models) since at least 2012.

The oil filter (GU27153085) is also the current filter for the V7 and V9 small blocks (no idea about the V85TT) and retrofitted all the way back at least to 2003.

Just making sure—you’re aware that the II is a one year only model, and while it shares parts with much older small blocks, some things are totally unique to the II, like the dash gauges, bell housing, and gearbox; don’t remember about any specific innards, but much of the engine uses same part numbers as older models.

Some V7II's in'15 or '16 had issues with the crankshaft thrust washers. If it were me, I'd go with a III.

BMW can be a nice choice.

I don’t think the thrust washers were the issue, but rather the crankshaft. Still, wouldn’t they have all mostly grenaded themselves by this point? Unless one is buying a very low-mileage V7 II, I’d surmise the bike wouldn’t be one of those self-destructing time bombs.

I’m no expert, but from my cursory research, it seemed the Nevada Classic used a different air filter. I like to use https://www.motoguzzi.genuine-parts-catalogue.com/ for much of my cross-referencing. The Nevada Classic uses an air filter that appears to be shared by a bunch of other bikes in the 90s and early 00s, but I don’t see that filter being used by any of the V7s. Again, I could be wrong.

Most basic maintenance and supplies are the same between my MkI and MKIII, though the bikes are surprisingly different in other ways.

Yes some MKII's were made with an undersized crankshaft which allows the thrust bearing to eventually move out of position and the crank starts to eat the bearing and/or block.

You would think they all would have been found by now but some seen to last thousands of miles and sadly not all 2016 Guzzis have seen that yet as they still seem to crop up.

The Vii I know about is a low km bike ~ 8906 Kilometers.
About the imploding shaft referred to:  is there a VIN range or was it across the production run?
The Vii is 2500 km south of me. It is a long way to walk back if the drivetrain makes an exit.

@Faffi... the 'complete tear down' would be to peel away 70,000 km of chip-seal and gravel roads. Most of the mileage was spent at 4500 to 5500 rpm.
So, mechanically it may be fine but there is substantial patina I'd like to clean up. If the motor is on the bench I may as well paint the frame.
As for the BMW... a local small-aircraft pilot is having to stop doing fun stuff for health reasons. The bike he has was service in an Alaskan Dealership at 6000km two years ago. It hasn't reached 7k.
A 2005 model so my only concern is the seals may be dry from lack of use... guessing on a BM'r that could get expensive.

THis morning while searching dealerships I saw a couple 2 wheel drive Ural that I thought would be fun up here... please talk me out of it.

"imploding shaft"?

Are you asking about the undersized cranks?!?

If so, no.

Afaik Piaggio never had a solid grip on it. My guess is a batch of bad cranks was mixed with rest and they couldn't be certain which ones got a bad one and which got a good one.

To the point, they never issued a straight up recall based on VIN. You had to operate until failure and submit a warranty claim for a new motor.

Most seemed to go udders skyward by 5-6k miles at most.

Kev, you caught my error and answered the question - 2 points to the guy who writes manuals. Thanks.
I was target fixated on the thread about V7 as a tug… was a back of the mind consideration for the re build.

:thumb: I actually wondered if that was the case.

Good luck with your search and however you find bliss!!!
