speedo hardened washer install
« on: July 31, 2023, 05:37:50 PM »
Hi all, I am finally getting around to getting my T3 back together after a clutch and u-joint replacement.

I have hit a roadblock and need some advice. I have replaced the input and output seals on my transmission, and to get the speedo drive back in, I stuck the bottom hardened washer to a pick with some grease and deposited it at the bottom of the speedo gear hole. I am using a flashlight to try to see if it is in place or not, but I can't really tell. I am worried that it might have slipped somehow under the speed gear drive, but maybe that's crazy. Was I supposed to wait to put the new seal in before I dropped the washer down the hole? Mostly looking for advice on whether I need to pull the seal and make sure the washer is in the right place or not.

Thanks for any ideas, assurances, etc.

You should have done the seal first. Then use some tacky grease to put the washer on the speedo Drive then put the unit down as an assembly. Try using a small magnet to go down the speedometer hole to see if you can retrieve it.

I typically use a long wire like coat hanger wire.  Probe that into the hole at the bottom and then drop the grease-coated washer down over the wire.  That insures that the washer is centered over the hole.  A long, rigid magnet should pull it back up to try again.

This is brilliant. Thank you! I'll retrieve the washer with a magnet and do the wire trick.

When I have re installed speedo drive gears, I used a tiny bit of contact cement to glue the washer to the bottom of the drive gear. That way I was assured it stayed in place for the install.

Not so long ago I looked pretty good in a speedo ... Alas, not swimming or diving that much any more.

+1. I’ve done this before. Work slowly and use a magnet to pull it me retry.
