Radial Tires for V7 III?
« on: July 29, 2023, 11:12:42 AM »
Road Attack 3 was the only radial tire that I know of to fit the V7 III. With it being discontinued I am looking for a replacement preferably a radial.  If not is there a bias ply tire that will absorb rough roads?  The Pirelli that came OEM was like wood.

I found this on google: Some of the best tires for the Yamaha YZF-R3 include the Shinko 006 Podium Radial Tire, Michelin Road 5, Diablo Rosso Corsa 2, Angel GT, Battleax T31, Pilot Street 2, Mitas E-10, Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A40 Tires, Dunlop Q3 Plus Sports Max, and the Michelin Power RS tires.

Those would be 140/70-17 rears, which will not be perfect for your 3.50-rim, but they should work OK if there is room inside the swingarm. Whether or not they have a suitable front to match with your 18 inch rim, I do not know, but Avon has a Spirit ST in your 100/90ZR18 desired size. Unfortunately, they have discontinued their rear radials in the size(s) you can use.

Dunlop D205 used to have a 140/80ZR17 that was made for 3.50in rims, but I do not believe they still make them.

I bet you can find 6-10 v7 tire threads here if you search.

Maybe I can add some clarification.  After how hard the stock bias Pirellis were, and how incredible the RA3's absorbed rough roads I am aghast at the thought of going back to bias. In SC secondary roads have really deteriorated.

The only radial I can find in our sizes is the A41, but I read your comments that it has stiff side walls.  This is as expected in a dual sport tire. Would it still be less stiff than the bias ones that are recommended on the threads?  It seems that the Metzeler Roadtec 01, Bridgestone BT46, Avon Roadrider rise to the top.  Any input of comfort?

My Breva has a 130/80/17 radial on the rear. Not the easiest size to find here in NZ. However, that particular size also comes on one of the Triumph Thruxtons. They us as OEM a steel belted radial, a Metzeler MZ2. Not sure if it still available but it is certainly better than the Pirelli Sport Demon it came with.

Thanks but the MZ2 must be a discontinued model as it is not on their site.

These appear to still be current https://www.continental-tires.com/products/b2c/motorcycle/tires/contiroadattack-3-cr.html?articleID=02445830000

Also check this, which indicate that the RA3 is still available: https://www.continental-tires.com/products/b2c/motorcycle/search-results.html?searchMode=sbs&sizeDesignation=130%2F80%20R%2017 plus https://www.continental-tires.com/products/b2c/motorcycle/search-results.html?searchMode=sbs&sizeDesignation=100%2F90%20R%2018

Road Attack 3CR is a great tire but... the rear wears nearly unbelievably quickly. Bought a 110/80/18 for the rear of a V7 Sport and the middle lost its round profile in fewer than 1,000 miles.

only other radial option is the BT46 I think, which I just put on. Happy with them, good tires.

I put Pirelli MT 60 radial on the front and bias on the rear, same as OEM on the V7 Rough. I think the Shinko 705 comes in radial if you can find them.

Forgot to mention that the radial front was noticeably better than the OEM bias in terms of feel and compliance. Having the matching bias rear had no negative affects and felt totally normal.

Never heard of a BT46 radial? I thought they were a replacement for the bias ply BT45s.

Correct. BT45 and 46 are Bias not Radial.
