Stupid is as stupid does..
« on: September 30, 2023, 07:31:14 PM »
On a whim.. I stopped and looked at a project bike.. 1977 convert....    don't need it but couldn't say no to the price. I'll be asking a lot of questions soon so, I'll say sorry up front.
I know nothing about the big blocks or the automatic. !

You are waaaay too early in this project to claim stupidity.  Be patient, don't get ahead of yourself.

Stupidity is a badge of honor that must be earned.

Big Blocks are simple and robust. The Convert drivetrain can have a few issues to correct, but nothing really serious.

Mine finally got a bath today!

There is a forum available which is specific to the CONVERT.  You should join and post questions there.

I thought so, too, for the first 500 miles.

90,000 miles later….

So I picked up the convert today... loaded up all the bits we could find.  And when about done, the old guy mentioned another bike that I could just take if I wanted.. took me around the corner and there sits an air head..1976 I think.  So two projects for $100....

1976 is a good year. R90? I had an R90/6, great bike. Easy to work, on good fuel mileage, fairly smooth and parts are readily available

Turns out that the BMW is a 1970. R75/5...  some one tried to pull the right jug and has broken some fins... but that's repairable...

Before my R90 I had a 1970 R75/5. It was the first one in Denver, I had a deposit on it for months. What is the build date, it is on the data plate on the headstock. Mine was built in November 1969. You scored on this bike, very collectable.

So,  my convert cam with a full set of luggage and a fairing, I will get photos..  but im fairly sure that the fairing is a wind-jammer  Did the convert come with optional OEM luggage ?  or was it all aftermarket back in '77 ?

Converts came with saddlebags, but not a trunk.

Saddlebags like these: https://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36&products_id=821

So it's clear that the luggage is not OEM. I have attached a few photos, I think that the fairing is a Windjammer,  but can anyone identify the remaining bits ?

Saddlebags are DB, not sure about the trunk.

Standard early-ish Windjammer, std aftermarket add on in the day. Armies of them at rallies of the day. Pop some clean fresh bulbs (led?) and polish the lenses. Turn them on at dusk and be amazed…run your 8track tape behind the fairing, pumped thru the add-on speakers and 8 track ..quite sure you can smoke cigars behind it. And drink coffee…put your feet up…use the thumb screw on the Tommaselli throttle and point it to the horizon…..

Dan Brown, DB bags, sleep six on both sides…can’t tell about the top box…seems different but period correct…compare the fiberglass thickness and build on the top box, it might be similar…the red/black stripes look to me kinda like the Wixom saddle bags, white w red/black stripes

I found it best to load the heavy small stuff (every tool you’ll never need if you carry it..) up into the fairing buckets, then balancing with larger lighter stuff in the back bags and trunk. The bike loved it like a sled dog pulling thru snow..
