t3 clutch pushrod assembly
« on: October 01, 2023, 03:19:36 PM »
Hi all, I am finally getting around to finishing my clutch and u-joint replacement on my 1976 t3 (first time this deep into the bike, with all of the usual surprises, frustrations, etc).

My tranny seals and clutch hub are now replaced, and I am installing the longer clutch pushrod for the RAM clutch that I have bolted on. I removed the current rod and was surprised not to see any of the cone-shaped rubber seals on it. It had no seals at all. The old rod and bits is at the top of the photo. The new rod plus the new plunger assembly (not sure what it is called) is on the bottom.

I have some probably stupid questions.

1. My understanding is that I should install the cone rubber things (two). I accidentally bought four. Should I install all four? And in what direction and where on the rod?
2. My new replacement "plunger" is slightly longer than the original one and has two o-rings. I assume it will still work?
3. The old pushrod assembly didn't have any rubber seals, but it did have an inch-long metal tube (see top photo). Do I keep that on the new assembly?

Thanks for any help. This is the most ambitious I've been on this old bike, and despite one episode that involved me throwing a chunk of two by four across the garage and knocking a dent in my garage fridge (when trying to crab the frame) I think I now have some chance of getting it back to together correctly.

1/3 - That thing you call an "inch long metal tube, is actually petrified plastic. That is supposed to be the seal. Get rid of it. Generally, Guzzi used them up to around 1976. Then Guzzi went to the cones. Two per shaft. They go on the shaft first, fat end to the forward end of the tranny. Then throwout bearing inner body. Then the throwout bearing, then the outer body or plunger. When installed, the cones will fit into a recess in the input/clutch shaft, forced into it if you will, by that inner body.

FWIW, I have seen the recess actually accept three cones on trannys into 1978, I've got two Guzzis from that year. Past that time, I can't say where the year break is where they stopped counter boring that recess into the shaft as deep as before. Four won't fit.

2 - Yes, new type plunger will work.

I don't use the cones, have had them leak. Instead I use six of the o-rings like Moto International used to supply.
