I learned to ride in NYC in the 70's and commuted to work. Back then to get a license for either a bike or a car you took a road test on the street with other vehicles. I now live in NJ and you take your drivers test for both cars and motorcycles in a parking lot with traffic cones. So most new drivers don't have real time experience driving in traffic, let alone knowing how to handle their vehicle. Now put them on a highway at high speed. Police are overwhelmed and can't enforce traffic laws. It is not unusual to be on the Garden State Parkway and have cars passing you at triple digit speeds. Be careful out there.

Truth. I’ve had cars pass me on the GSP on the shoulder, while im doing 20mph over the limit in the “slow” lane.

Stuff like that ?
Impound the car and crush it for starters.
Optional life ban first time, mandatory life ban second.
Driving without licence, 5 years jail.

Is that what they do in Australia?

I've noticed that drivers are better in cities that have functional public transit. It seems part of the solution is to give an alternative to people who are bad at driving and shouldn't be driving. Illinois has some of the worst drivers, but as someone who motorcycle commuted in Chicago for years and still rides there, it's one of the safest places to ride on a motorcycle. Sure everyone's doing what looks crazy and constantly breaking traffic laws, but they're paying attention while doing so. Meanwhile in the suburbs there are always close calls with distracted drivers.

Ultimately it's your decision. Each day you get on a motorcycle you assume risk, more so than in a safe and modern automobile. Being right or wrong and obeying traffic laws are never so important as being safe, you can be in the right all you want but that's of little reassurance if you're in the hospital. Practicing emergency maneuvers and anticipating the actions of others are things that some riders give up on soon after an MSF course or getting their license and it's a real problem.

When I rode my brand new V100 home from the dealership in Reno I was confused. It had been reported that the speedometers on these were quite optimistic. I was running with traffic on the highway, my speedometer was registering 83 mph or so and people were passing me at a pretty good clip.. Being unfamiliar with the new bike I thought holy cow this speedometer isn't going to cut it. The bike was running along effortlessly and I had no idea of my actual speed. Later at home using the speedometer on my phone I determined the speedometer only read between 2 to 3 mph high no matter the speed I was running. People are getting more and more stupid every year. Are cops spending so much time cleaning up messes and doing mountains of paperwork because of all the messes and violations they don't have much time to patrol?

I think cops are in a no win situation today.  Make a vehicle stop, and risk their life, or, have to use deadly force and ruin their career, maybe freedom too. In the last few years, highway lawlessness is rampant.

In traveling east to Maine I prefer going thru Canada despite higher gas prices. On the 4 lanes they have signs warning that you can lose your vehicle if caught over a certain speed. The speeds are lower and the drivers are courteous, not scary like interstates here.
