Hydro recall kit tools
« on: December 29, 2023, 01:50:26 PM »
So I was very lucky and purchased the recall kit that a member posted here.
I located the kit instructions and printed. It showed the special tools required for the install and I can get by with making or using similar tools with the possible exception of the gauge. Does anyone have one for borrow, rent or purchase?
If you have one can you please take the time to measure its length and post, I can make the lifter gauge using one of the old hydraulic lifters if I know its length.

This brought me to a has anyone ever moment. Has anyone tried setting the original hydraulic lifters to gauge length and fixing in that position converting it to an old school non hydro screw adjustable valve train? Not something I will do just wondering if anyone went down that path for giggles.

Thanks

I once spoke to ACE Mallet ( likely misspelled, sorry ACE) the MGNOC Missouri rep and pretty darn good Guzzi mechanic about switching my 03 EV to regular valves. This was probably back in 2007, when some of the fix’s were failing, His response was “anything is possible”. Fortunately my fix hasn’t so far required further fixing, and I didn’t have to find out.

In the distant past, at least one member here had a set of tools for the recall that they were willing to lend.  I don’t recall who it was.

Most of the tools in the kit were to make the job faster for a shop to do the work. Like clips and a rubber band to hold the tappets up while you change the cam.

The only two that I would really want is the adjuster slug for the hydo lifter when you adjust the clearance. Also the clamping like tool to hold down the rockers so you can get the rocker pin out.

Some here have done the job without the tool kit. Maybe they could add what they did for work arounds?

I was able to get a start today. Front cover removed and rocker arms, was able to twist rocker shafts and pull out.
Will cut a socket and weld in a piece of pipe for the crank nut. When I get the kit, Tuesday, I’ll be able to make what I need for the lifters. If I had the gauged lifter height I can make that also. Found a tool at HF that I can make work for the valve springs. I was hoping there would be enough chain slack to pull the cam gear but that’s not happening, need to remove other gears as well (as noted in instructions).
In contact with a member who has the lifter tools and gauge so that will make things easier.
So far pretty straight forward process.

You have to remove the them as a set. So....

TDC the LH cyl. (Per riding position) on compression stroke. The cam and crank marks S/B lined up. Take a paint pen or the like and put a mark on each gear and a corresponding mark on the chain. When you go to install, they will all be lined up correctly to slide on the shafts and pin and keys. Makes the job much easier.

Yep, I have it set up, marks aligned. When the cam gear starts to come off I’ll snake some zip ties to hold the chain.
I’ll make the socket tomorrow and get the gears removed, the rest will have to wait.

Whipped together a crank nut tool, zip tied the cam and crank gears and all is well.
The pickup gear is missing two teeth so I’ll have to get a new one…….kidding.
Right side valve spring cap is shiny and aluminum, left side is dull and steel. No idea why.

Received the kit today and the springs are done. I was surprised both sides required the exact same shims, .3 on the intakes and 1.2 on the exhausts.
I found a lifter spec which is 30.62 bottomed, 32.2 working, 33.9 extended. I will install the new lifters and set the lash to 1.6 mm with the lifter bottomed. Once pressurized it will set the lifter to the working height.
I won’t have to use a gauge or install gauge, disassemble, install lifter. Everything can be installed and then the lash set, one and done.
I’m guessing whatever hydros needed to be done are done, mine is the last one.

Here’s a pic of the valve springs between cylinders, one side done other was not.
The lifter still in the bucket is welded in place, can’t remove.
Also shows tools used to update, cheap throw aways but did the job perfectly.
Big difference between spring assemblies.
Cam lobes starting to wear, failure was inevitable.

I will keep that in mind if I need to do a top end on my Hydro.

Thanks!
