My Hyundai Sonata locked up with 87K on it. The Theta II where notorious for engine failures because Hyundai/Kia did not clean the oil passages after milling the engines. All the aluminum dust was left and many thought of miles later the bearings failed. Hyundai had a class action law suit so my engine was covered under a lifetime warranty. So a few days ago I get my car back with a new long block in it. Today I kept hearing my brain say check the oil. So I check the oil and it was over filled by a whopping 2 1/2 quarts!!! I though at first maybe they put the wrong dipstick in it. But the only way to know is drain it. So I drained it and it filled my drain pan to the top. I measured off just shy of 5 quarts (oil filter was full) and poured that in the engine. It was spot on. Then I poured the over filled oil into a opaque 1 gallon container. That was half full. I measured it at 2 1/2 quarts. Now what am I faced with as possibilities if there is any damage. 1st thing is the engine only had 60 miles on it with the extra oil. But can I expect damage even with just 60 miles on it with 2 1/2 extra quarts. I didn't dare drive it anywhere even back to the dealer. I didn't think to have it towed. So I just fixed the problem. I was jacked up pissed and now that I have come down I am wondering what the thoughts out here might be. I plan on going over to the service manage and stick this jug of extra oil in his face but can 60 miles with that much oil damage it in 60 miles. I've been researching it but nothing yet that I can hold on to.
I measured it at 2 1/2 quarts.
Wait, what base and brand oil was it?
Since the OP has already acted, I personally would not say anything. The longblock is under warranty, I presume, and admitting you have done anything - other than perhaps siphoning out oil via the dipstick.
I never thought about saying I siphoned the oil. I drained the whole block and the measured just under 5 quarts and put it back in and then what was left ended up in the gallon jug.
You could have stopped when the level was correct.
If it's worth a little money to you, you can send a sample of that oil to Blackstone or Speeddiagnostix to have it tested.
