Barn Find LM3

Morning All,

i have a Guzzi again, a barn find LM3. Hadn't run in 15 years (it did yesterday for the first time) and i am looking to get the old girl going again.

All the rubber parts have perished and the PO has been playing with/lost some of the loom. So if i am digging into that i'd like to modenrize where possible. I did some searching here for the "best" reg/rec combo off the shelf with mixed answers. The sachs sounds good but is quite bulky and they say not waterproof. A charge light is not a priority for me, just nice to have. So uf the is something off the shelf thats the way i'd like to go.

I am in Germany so parts from mainland Europe would be ideal.

I purchased a harness for my CX but it was converted to a LM I, so a harness for that bike was purchased from MG Cycle. I thought I'd save a few bucks by not buying Greg Bender's harness but the Stein-Dinse harness wasn't wired correctly for a LMI so I had to pay Greg to sort it out and in the end it cost me as much or more than buying one from Greg.  I know you're in Europe but if you do buy a Stein-Dinse harness be aware that there could possibly be a problem.

It looks to me like that regulator/rectifier is for the 400 watt charging system below it on the webpage, not the original Bosch system, and will not work.

As for parts, Stein Dinse are great but I'd also recommend HMB Guzzi - not only for parts but I found them very helpful with information when I was recommissioning my LM2.

HMB's packing and shipping staff could take lessons from Stein-Dinse's. What few times I have purchased from HMB, the items were just loose in a large box, free to move around. Not good when what you ordered was Gilardoni cylinder kits! A customer had multiple items get lost due to hole in the box because of improper packaging.

Last time I ordered anything it took two months to arrive, due to a DHL worker strike. HMB knew about the strike, but shipped DHL anyway. Their shipping costs are higher than Stein-Dinse, yet S-D ships via UPS and packages arrive here in four days.

looks like the sachs might well be the best/only option. I'll probably make the loom myself and am thinking of using a Motogadget M-Unit, which seem to be the go-to way to modernise/make reliable.

It also appears that the bike has a 949 kit on and 40mm carbs (That have no choke ??????????) and 106dB is in the paperwork - which is REALLY loud.

Compression test over the weekend and i'll be stripping down next week taking bits to the blasters and then painters.

Do any of you know what size the stock front master cylinder is as i'd like to replace that.

In lieu of a choke you have "ticklers". See lower right of picture you posted. Basically, it's a plunger that you depress a couple of times releases fuel into the intake. Open the petcocks, give each carb a tickle and fire it up. Crude but effective.

you'll be able to use a SPII rear fender if you need a replacement. I used one on one of my former LM3 bikes.

Here we go with some more question and a staus update.

How do iget the Cushdrive out of the rear wheel? Have removed the Ring held on with 3 bolts and the plastic insert but nothing doing?
The UJ had alot of oil on it so i am guessing the rear drive output seal is past its best. Can i renew it with everything in situ or do i have to strip the gearbox down?

Oh and Cylinder Compression, 200psi on the left, 190 on the right.

bit high? This was with dry bores, carbs and exhaust off.

I have been looking for a basket case le mans 3 for some time.
best of the le mans series IMHO
i wouldnt bother updating the charging system , the original parts are cheap and reliable. are you rebuilding it to original spec?

well the bike wasn't/isn't original as it came to me. The Original Fairings/Bodywork are gone, and it has an LM1 Tank on it. Unfortunately i am not made of money nor will i wait for years to hunt down missing parts. So i am going to make the best of what i found. There are some bits in boxes (new fuel taps, all new fluids brake pads and line amongst other things) the orignal Headlamp i think, what looks like V50 clocks in a 3D printed housing which is neat. But ultimately my plan is to get the old girl going and riding as quickly as possible.
So a new loom is on the cards, cheap and easy to make as well as some updates. It will be a usable bike, but no garage queen.

Its a build. Not my first. so lets see how it turns out.

I'd find a rear fender, pop on a flyscreen and be done. The lemans 1 tank is a bonus. Looks good, congrats!

Sounds good to me, my LM2 (with new Gilardoni cylinder/pistons) has 200psi so I would say yours is healthy.

with the current cafe racer craze you would be amazed how easy it is to find the original parts.
i bought mine as a failed cafe racer, used it for daily transport for a couple of years before rebuilding it back to stock.
all the missing parts turned up on ebay within a couple of months.

but anyway , its your bike , just build what you like.

another update and i am after a tipp for how to clean out the top frame tube thats used as a breather box. I understand - at least it looked that way fron the hose configuration - that there is a dran that goes back into the engine so want to ensure its all clean.

My 1983 LM3 had tubes.

I converted the rims on my CX from tube to tubeless about 6-7 years ago and have never had a problem. You need to rough up the inside of the rims where the bead seats and buy a tire valve from Napa. I used a bit of silicone around the valve stem when they were installed.

I'm running my LM3 tubeless. It's the safest way to go.
