Rim corrosion 2008 Breva 750
« on: September 25, 2024, 05:42:54 PM »

I've had the bike for 8 years and there's never been a problem before, but in the past year I've had a very slow leak (less than 5lb a week) in the rear tyre. On fitting a new one the tyre-man found the above mess all around the rim. Not only is the paint coming off but there is corrosion in the metal. He has cleaned it up a bit and put sealant around it and it should be fine until I need another tyre.

What are my options for repair or will it be beyond saving?

Just bought a pair of Lester rims that looked about like that. Spent a couple of days with a file, sandpaper, steel wool and a bit of JB Weld dressing out or filling the imperfections. I finished the job with a power buffer. I'm not loosing air over the long term. It's a bit labor intensive, but clean and polish is all you need to do.

I'd put the wheel in a wheel balancer, fire up the angle grinder with a new SS wire wheel on it and clean off all the loose stuff and corrosion. Then mask off the outer rim lip and give the drop center a few coats of clear coat, let it dry a day or so, spoon on a new tar and ride.

I use an aluminum etch after I clean off the big stuff. Then I use alodine which forms a surface protective coating, technically a ceramic, to stop further corrosion and promote paint adhesion. Check auto parts store and just follow the instructions on the product
Edit - that’s for aluminum rims which I thought yours are but I can’t tell for sure

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like the rim can be saved with a bit of of work.
