V9 kick stand wear
« on: October 17, 2024, 08:01:45 AM »
There is wear in the kick stand on my Roamer that causes it to lean WAYYYY over.

I'm not sure where the issue is yet, but if it's in the mount welded to the frame how do I get the frame rail off.

Is it just remove all the fasteners or do I have to support the engine/gearbox assembly somehow?

Cheers

Picture? May be normal, most Guzzis lean over quite a bit which I appreciate especially on crowned roadsides.

That was a common problem on the Norge. The bolt holding the stand to the frame would come loose. Had to remove the header pipe to access it.

I'll see what I can do.

However,  the end of the stand moves a good couple of inches before the slack is taken up.

I'm used to the Cali style that locks in place,
This is a simple fork and I'm not sure if the free play is in the bolt hole (would need the frame rail off) or the stand itself

Bolt doesn't appear to be loose

Could be that the pivot fork that envelopes the pivot tab on the frame got bent. The steel is soft enough that on my V7 II, I had to hammer the split occasionally so that the ends would be parallel, otherwise the pivot fork got sloppy. Note that I tend to roughhouse my side stand more than others—I’ll use it as a pivot to turn the bike around, stand or sit on the bike with the side stand deployed, and other things not recommended for a street bike.

I hadn't thought of the club hammer adjustment technique.
I shall investigate further

And to actually answer your question, if you do need to remove that left frame rail, it’s fairly simple. I would make sure the motor is supported solidly supported up front; the motor will still be suspended in the rear at the two engine mount bolts below and in front of the triangular side panel section. You’ll also have the right side frame rail supporting the front, but no more support in the front left. Maybe just a block or jack supporting that side, preferably with the bike on a center stand, but a milk crate would work, too.

Instead of a hammer I would use a C clamp to squeeze it together and a rubber mallet.

Not sure what your stand has been subjected to, but the sidestand on my 2017 V9 Roamer is very tight indeed, not a hint of slop and noticeable friction when putting it down or bringing it up.

Curious,  your bike is exactly the same age as mine.
I've done 15k miles IIRC.  What's yours done?

I doubt it's wear, sounds like something might have worked its way loose.  I find my v9 stand gets very tight over time, as the grease seems to get washed out.  I spay a bit on the pivot and it works like new, nice and easy.  They do lean over quite a bit, more than I like.  Your going to need to get down and take a look.

Just under 10K miles. But I agree with the others that the bike lean quite a bit. I place a 2 inch block under my stand in the garage, and with that lean is what I consider normal. It seems to be an unfortunate characteristic of Guzzis, mimicking that of Harley Davidson.

The pivot bolt’s function never was and never will be, to stop the stand from being able to do what yours does.
It should be a firm sliding fit onto the plate.
Take it off and see if the slot in the stand is parallel and if not, heat it up to yellow and squeeze it back in a large vice while malleable.
Then replace the pivot bolt and tighten it up, a lock wire would be good.
Then replace the lock nut.
Note that the lock nut is not there to clamp the fork, it is to stop the pivot from unwinding.

Thanks for all the wise words people  :thumb:

I've committed the cardinal sin, in that while I've sorted it I don't know for certain what the root cause was  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

However here's what I found.

Lock nut slightly loose
Hole in frame oval
Fork out of parallel by 0.5mm

So tightened everything up and normal service has been resumed

Thanks again

The V7III stand was like that too. I cut and attached a plastic foot under the stand to reduce the lean. Before that I was using a wooden block in the garage as well.

If the hole has ovaled out. Find a bushing that fits a NEW bolt and drill the oval out to accept the O.D. of the bushing. Let the bushing wear instead of the steel. Proper repair.  My $.02
