trying to find Dave Brow / DB cycles
« on: April 12, 2025, 01:42:14 PM »
I bought a bike from Dave back in the early 2000's and I'm interested in learning more of the history of the bike. He was in Lima New York for many years. Thanks!

He’s dead for years now.  He sold me a shiny turd of an ice blue 850 lemans for big money about 10 years ago.  I made him buy it back.

You sure Cam? He was in the local news just a few years ago. I bought my EV from Dave and his partner when they had a Guzzi dealership.

I’m sure, Dave Brown.  He closed down the Guzzi dealership a long time ago.  Pretty sure Kev M on here bought his jackal from him back in the day.  He focused on selling high end Ducati’s and Guzzi’s during my dealings with him.  My experience wasn’t good.

If you google David Brown, Lima, NY it shows an address and phone number. No obit. We can leave his character for another time.

Agreed, and I’m sorry for whoever was close to him.  He was working deals with Peter Boggia from Moto Borgotero in Brooklyn.  Call the number.

Well I had a similar experience as Cam. 850 le mans which turned out to be nothing more than a T3 w/ a cx100 tank. He bought that one back too. My experience with him in the early 2000's when he had a partner was an excellent experience though. Twists and turns of life affect us all, and not always as one might want.

I am pretty sure I know where he lives or lived in Lima, NY.  I never got to know him, only met him once or twice. If it is important I could take a ride there and see.

I did buy my first Guzzi from him.

I don't think there was anything nefarious in our dealings, though it did turn out later I found my Jackal had been dropped and the tank repaired (when we stripped it for a new paint job).

The accident wasn't disclosed, but I have no idea if he even knew about it. Nor does it matter to me in retrospect as the price vs the condition was fine.

It might explain how a certain amount of things on the bike were just not quite in alignment... Ran and handled fine though so again, what does it matter.

I might have felt different if it was more expensive.

.Kev,
That is interesting about the gas tank.  When my shop sold Guzzi's, we uncrated a 850T and noticed the gas tank finish wasn't quite as good as the other ones.  We stripped the paint for the painter  and found bondo filler over several areas of the tank.  We figured the factory repaired flaws in the tanks before painting.

Too much wine on the assembly line that Friday makes for slippery gas tanks?

Ooooohhhhhh, thanks for that. So it's possible we were wrong about a drop and it came from the factory that way. Interesting (and troubling at the same time).

I bought my Jackal from him new in early '01.
He did right by me; got accessories all set-adjustable fly shield, Hepco-Becker bags, second front disc from the factory. He was also willing to get (and install on a new bike) a standard crossover (instead of the colostomy bag thing), as well as shifter/rear brake/foot peg brackets from an old something-or-other (850T, maybe? He wasn't sure).
I know that he had a brisk business in internet sales of used Guzzi and Ducati parts-which can always lead to he said/she said stuff..

He closed the shop around 2002-03 or so. He was telling me that back then that, in order to get big bikes, Piaggio made you get a few scooters-which didn't sell for squat back then. He also said that his receivables for reimbursements from Piaggio for PDI and warranty repairs were horrible. I get the impression that he was a better tech/Guzzisti than a businessman.

So, the sun decided to shine today, which it hasn't for about two weeks I think.  I saddled up the V7C and took a ride out to Lima,NY to see if I could find Dave Brown.  I stopped at his house and met and chatted with his wife.  She told me that Dave passed away after suffering a stroke 41/2 years ago.  She told me that she still has a lot of parts that she hopes to sell, when she retires in about a year.  She said there is a lot of bevel Ducati parts, along with Laverda and Guzzi stash.  She said it isn't inventoried now and thinks she will start that process when she retires.  She would like to sell it all at once as a big package.  I hope this information clears up the question of Dave Brown.
