Vent pipe check valve and speedo cable questions

There's a brass check valve that uses a captured steel ball at the back end of a large diameter (7/16"?) vent pipe on my Bassa. It had light brown milky goo in it. I'm guessing that's either frothed up oil or dirty lithium grease. What should I lubricate this valve with if anything when I install the new vent pipe?







My Bassa's speedo cable doesn't seem to be fastened to the housing at its back end. You can just pull it out with no tools or twisting. The rubber boot doesn't secure the cable end to the housing. Should there be threads or some fastening piece?

The milky goo is water mixed with oil. The valve isn't lubricated with anything during installation.

There is supposed to be an "olive" or ferrule under that knurled nut that compresses onto the outer cable and holds it in place when the nut is tightened. If that's missing, I've substituted small o-rings to do the same thing. You can see the brass "olive" in this photo.

The rubber boot has pulled off of the knurled nut in your speedo cable picture.  If you carefully unscrew the nut, you might find the split collet "olive" under it.  The nut probably loosened up enough to allow the cable to slip out of the olive.
