Trip odometer reset knob

The thin brass threaded shaft inside my Bassa's speedometer housing that accepts the female threaded reset knob is only about 3 or 4 mm long. I suspect that it somehow broke off leaving that little stub. The new knob doesn't tighten on the threads because there aren't enough of them. I did read that it's reverse threaded.

How do you operate the reset button when it's installed and works? Turn it counterclockwise?

I'm wondering what I could do to make it operable. I read someone crazy glued on a thin straw from a spray can. Maybe I could crazy glue on the new knob. I ask how it works so I know where to not apply any adhesive if I do try gluing the knob on.

I have a similar issue on my 1981 T3 California - the knob is missing and none of the replacements that I have found are the correct diameter/thread. I haven't wanted to try gluing something on because you have to remove the trip reset knob to remove the gauge from the dash housing...

Reset is accomplished by rotating knob anticlockwise until all numbers are moving and match. Stop at all zeros.

What about a small length of rubber hose, of suitable diameter? A dab of silicone sealant to afford some protection from the knob popping off. Some trip resets use this method (or plastic tube) as standard.

I hadn't thought that maybe it's just the wrong I.D. I should take the housing off and re-evaluate why mine's not threading on. Here's a view through the housing hole of the threaded stub.

I contacted Joel Levine who repairs Veglia gauges in GA. He says:

Moto guzzi veglia speedometers with the side trip meter reset knob came in either 3mm left hand thread or a 2.5mm right hand thread.
 What you have probably is a 3mm inside diameter.
 When we have those gages for repair and need the knob we make them on a lathe and blend the cost into the full repair cost.
 The least expensive way is for you to find one for  a 2.5mm thread.
 We could make one but there is a $75.00 minimum charge.

I contacted MG Cycle and suggested they change the description text for the knob they sent me to say it might or might not fit.
