Identify this muffler?

Does anyone know what silencer I might have here on a '79 1000SP (besides the obvious -- a bent one!)

I'd like to replace it and I'm not sure if it makes more sense to get one side or if having one new and one old muffler is going to look weird.

Exhaust doesn't appear to be stock as the crossover has been moved to the front.

Any pointers would be much appreciated. Haven't been around these bikes long enough to know the various muffler permutations.

Those are Bubs, they usually got a stamp on the hanger of something. Headpipes have a X over close to alt cover & run strait across L to R..

I'd just replace the pair, universal mufflers are fairly cheap nowadays.  Get the ones with the separate mounting strap, so you can reuse the existing bracket(s).

Guess I should have figured they weren't stock as they don't have the cut to access the rear suspension nuts.

Any current mufflers that sound similar? Or better without being too excessively loud? These sound great but aren't so loud that I feel guilty coming home late. Seems like Bubs are long out of production. Keihan?

Emgo makes a few different inexpensive mufflers that may work for you. I have used their Dunstall replicas with good results on some older tontis.

The English company Feked makes (I believe) and sells stainless replicas of the original SP pipes.



I have a set of their chromed mufflers (NLA?) on my T3, which are well-made and are holding up well. The company gave excellent and help when I thought I had a problem. The distance across the Atlantic made no difference.

Yes. A good metal man should be able to repair it. Looks like it's Jet Hot coated?

The bubs on my SP were a slightly larger diameter exhaust than the original, so you may want to measure the muffler to head pipe diameters both ID and OD before you order a replacement or be prepared to modify with an internal exhaust pipe expander on your replacement muffler of choice.

Oh, cool. Didn't realize that was possible. It does indeed look to be coated.

Found the Bubs mark on the hanger so it's probably worth trying to get it fixed, given that these pipes seem to have a good rep.

They look repairable to me. Remove the baffle, straighten the dent by driving in a round object, maybe made of wood or PVC pipe, sand out the scratches and then polish it up.
Dunstalls work and the emgos are pretty inexpensive but they can be pretty loud. Ran them on my Norton and EV. They will boost the low end too, dyno tested.

BINGO, they had longer & shorter ones. I have the short ones on my LM3. End cap is same as what is shown. Drill rivet and remove cap & baffel

FWIW, I have a set of the Stainless Pipes and headers off a Bassa on my Convert. Look and sound great. You may be able to find a set cheap.

Just an update...

Went at it for a while with this exhaust expander tool from Harbor Freight: https://www.harborfreight.com/exhaust-pipe-expander-large-59698.html.

Was able to get the end of the muffler round again and also pushed out a deep dent a few inches down left by the muffler getting smashed down onto the lower shock nut. Really cool tool and it took only 10 minutes or so of playing around with it to push out the dents!

Used a dolly from a HF bodywork kit (but could have also use a hammer and some metal pipe) to straighten out the end cap edge.

Gouges in the Jet Hot coating remain as evidence of the damage but I think with some filing/sanding and a re-coating you'd be hard-pressed to tell it was ever damaged! Just wish there was a way I could touch up the ceramic without having to pay to have the mufflers re-coated...

I've got a pair of these Bub mufflers in my garage. They were on my T3. I replaced them with SS Mistrals. If anyone coming through Madison WI wants them for a nominal/fair price that we can discuss, just let me know.
