Speedy-sleeve shaft or ? Non-direct Guzzi content
« on: July 23, 2025, 06:45:08 AM »
Off brand question here.  I'm wondering what WG Guru's think.

I'm working on my old F150 that has a 5 speed trans.  Trans and motor are out.  I'm refreshing the trans seals which brings us to the problem.  The input shaft is badly scored on the seal running surface.  The wear is due to the seal.  The groove is smooth and even, but pronounced.  Easily 0.010" deep.

I'm looking at using a shaft sleeve repair.  My very qualified mechanic friend who is helping says I should use an alternate seal that is designed for the sleeve OD, not the original spec seal.  Make sense, but no such seal exists.

How bad is it to use the original spec seal over the increased sleeve diameter?  The shaft is 30mm, the sleeve would be 30.5mm. The catalogs allude it's Ok

The seal is pressed into a bolt on cover and backed by a lip in the cover. As an alternate to the sleeve, I'm considering machining the lip off which would allow shifting the new seal outward ~3mm and get the lip clear of the groove. Thoughts?

Thank you
Matt

I would say the seal will be OK on the sleeve. The sleeve only adds .010" per side.

I've never used a sleeve on a transmission shaft, but I used one on the crankshaft of a SBC for about 250k miles with no problem.  IIRC, it used the standard seal.
