19-20 v85tt oil consumption, Fixed Yet?
« on: April 21, 2026, 08:59:00 PM »
Has anyone fix their early model oil consumption issue? My 2019 V85tt is almost at 50,000 miles, it consumes 400dcc to 500cc of oil every 1500 miles. It just depends if the weather is really hot or not, I live in Southern California at 6000ft evelation and I ride down to the desert often(Palm Springs).

Id like to hear from someone with personal experience and not 2nd hand knowledge that they read somewhere on the web. If I can reduce the consumption, id be happy. The bike has been very good to me, I personally do all my own maintenance. Im just wondering if I should be looking on eBay for complete cylinder assemblies or just order new rings and gaskets? Of course, I'll have the heads inspected etc.

If anyone needs proof that they are burning oil, have your friends ride behind you! they'll tell you. My bike does not leak, very little use to oil collect in airbox. Ive disconnected the motor breather tube, that connects to the intake manifold/ airbox. if you know, you know. The engine breather tube now goes to a catch bottle, very little collects there too. Who has gotten their hands dirty and fixed this issue? If I can reduce my oil consumption in half, id be happy.

Thank You!

I would start with a proper leakdown test and determine the culprit. My $.02

My 2020 had the bad rings. I caught it while in warranty so they fixed it free. They only did the rings. Out of warranty they say to do cylinders also. That gets expensive. The only way you will know if you can get by with just rings is to tear it down. Not a big job. I think they only got 3 1/2 hours labor. You do need to do it as there was 3/8" end gap and it it breaks you will need cylinders and a full tear down to eliminate the debris. There will be a ton of carbon to clean up.

Yes, so much for Chinese rings. They don't run at 80#'s compression.
