V100 too HEAVY!!! or not...

What good is an opinion if you can't change it?

Several months ago I mentioned that I had looked at a V100 and decided it was a heavier bike than I wanted - even though my BMW R1200RS is a bit heavier!  IOW, I had decided I didn't want a Mandello. 

Now I'm trying to close a long distance deal on one.   

We are out of the country until late November and I'm offering to pay their discounted asking price for it now IF the dealer will then hold it for me until late November and THEN give me whatever "trade-in" money we agree upon when they see/examine my BMW.  But that wouldn't occur until I ride it to the shop to "exchange" it for the V100.  Their initial reaction is "NO" but they "are checking with management!"  They do trade-ins but that's assuming the whole deal is done at one time.  If they can't do a trade in as described, I'll have to pass.  I am not interested in privately selling the BMW.

Why did I change my mind re the Mandello?  Well, the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of any street motorcycle purchase for me has always been the bike's appearance. The Mandello is, to my eye, pretty much the prettiest bike around of its type.  That's all there is to it!!  We'll see what happens... ;)

That's an interesting type of trade purchase proposal. The last few trades I've done with motorcycles and cars have been done over the phone and Email where I provided detailed images of my motorcycle or car, and the price for the new bike/car as well as my trade-in price are agreed on up front. The disclaimer I always give is "if my bike/car is not as represented the deal can be canceled. I always represent them accurately disclosing every flaw, scratch, etc up front and there has never been an objection. I think you may have to agree on your trade value now based on them not receiving it until November in order to lock in the deal. They will understandably want you to agree to them being able to cancel the deal if your bike is not as represented though, say there's an engine knock, cams worn, dented wheels, etc.

Most of the time I can take my vehicle to consummate the deal within a week or two though, not 4 months as you're asking.

My advice is to wait until you are back home.  I am pretty sure another good deal on a V100 will be waiting for you.

BTW, I am 72 and don't find the V100 to be heavy.  Would I like a 100 lb weight reduction, sure, but that is only a pipe dream.

I was basically looking for two separate processes - I would bank transfer the full amount for the bike in the next few days; they would simply "store" it, fully-paid-for, until Nov.  Then I would ride the BMW in and they would evaluate it at that time, give me a check for whatever they determined was an acceptable price for them and I'd ride home on my V100.  I didn't see any bad side of it for them at all OTHER than the storage space involved but that might be a bigger issue than I realize.

My advice is to wait until you are back home.  I am pretty sure another good deal on a V100 will be waiting for you.

I am assuming it is a used V100, therefore I would want to look the bike over closely in person and take it for a test ride before committing the funds. 

If brand new then that changes things.  Tilts more in favor to the bike in the OP's sights.

And a unscrupulous dlr. Could renig, or just lowball you on it in November. It's best for everyone to to be upfront on a trade in. If it were me I would tell you sure we will sell you the bike and take your trade, but we won't give you a value on the bike till you bring it in.

Well said.  I would expect the dealer, if he takes the deal now, to lowball him in November.  Simply due to storing a new bike for four months, and then taking in a bike on trade that may not sell until spring.

Sounds like an excellent way to lose more money instead of a deal done in one day.

having been on both ends (dealer and customer) as a dealer I'd never agree to the offer.  And as stated before, there's always a Guzzi deal to be had.

FWIW, the bike is a "new" V100 "Wind Tunnel" which is the only model/color (red) of V100 I am interested in. But in thinking about it/seeing the responses here, I am now thinking that it doesn't seem too sensible to pay for a motorcycle model (Wind Tunnel) that I have never seen in real life. 

I was interested in this deal because in looking around on the internet/dealers, there don't seem to be many Wind Tunnels available.  But I have now decided to wait and see what happens in November. 

Hey, you know how motorcyclists are...they might buy a bike today and decide they don't like it all that much four months from now!!!  (I did essentially that with a Harley Wide Glide some years ago though it made it a bit beyond 4 months; sold it after 6 months!)

The Wind Tunnel has Ohlins suspension the V100S has without the other nannies.

After reading some, I would consider the Wind tunnel. Paint job looks nice. The upgraded suspension would be nice. Maybe the upgraded ABS. The rest they can keep, including the options.
