week of riding in north GA and NC/TN border; how is Two Wheels of Suches? update

As of May 8 I will be on a 16 week vacation. Will travel throughout the entire summer. For starters I plan to ride from N KY down to the area south of the Smokies on Sunday, May 10, and camp and ride in the area for a week. Will likely spend the first night at Two Wheels of Suches; haven't stayed there for quite a few years. How is the place now that it has been reopened under new ownership?

From there I might move to the National Forest Campground located about midway on the Cherohala Skyway (forgot the name of the campground; nice place).

I've spent many days riding in the area over the years; will likely retrace some familiar routes, but also try a few that are new to me. And, yes I will likely ride the tail-of-the-dragon, just because it's there and I do enjoy the circus environment....for a short while, anyway.

Ahhhh, I can see it now, sitting on top of one of those baldy mts., sipping Maker's Mark, and watching the sun get low in the sky.....life is good!

For Guzzi content: will likely take the Norge.

TWO is better than before, newer everything. I go for lunch or breakfast w/I go up there.
Got more cabins this year too.

I agree that TWO is better than before. If you can get a room upstairs, I'd suggest that. Friendly folks, good food and a fair price. Roads in the area are great for street or dual sport.

Two Wheels of Suches is great. The new owner put a LOT of time and effort into rebuilding it. A new bath house for the campground. There are about 8 camping cabins now. Lots of rocking chairs on the front porch to watch the poseurs ride by from.
The food isn't up to what GT had previously, but that has more to do with GT being so very good. Two Wheels isn't really bad. In the past they did NOT have Saturday evening dinner at TWOofS, I believe that just started have it. That is helpful.
Of course the Guzzi shop Riders Hill is just 12 miles south. And there are a million places to see and ride in the area. Let us know more exactly when you will be in the area. I'm about a hour south and go there often.

BTW, tell me more about this campground ON the Cherohala. I assume you mean NEAR the Cherohala, but maybe I missed something.

The campground I referred to is almost on the Skyway; it's the Indian Boundary National Recreation Area, just a few miles north of the Skyway on the TN side of the border. It's easy to get there; when I have camped there on week days it wasn't very crowded; great shower facilities, which is nice when you have been on the road for a prolonged period.

I've been to Riders Hill many times; bought the Norge from Anthony; Steve took could good care of the Norge early in its life.

I'll post more before I head down there.

Plenty of camping around Tellico Plains, TN and it is a jumping off point for the Cherohala. Also some good eating joints around town.

The new owner of TWoS fixed everything that was wrong with TWO and as Wayne says the place is real nice.  He just didn't keep the one thing that TWO always got right and that was the great food.  For us we always lived with run down facilities because we knew when we got there on a Friday night there would be a great dinner and plenty of brown bagged wine.

Glad to hear they are going to start Saturday dinner but they also need to improve the food quality of all their meals.  GT is gone but I'm sure there are other chefs in the area that could help them out.

Oh and I will be the area 15-17 May with a group of VX800 riders that still get together.  There might even be a VX or two!  We are staying at the Mountain View Cabins in Tellico Plains.

Don't forget if they are booked. High Valley is just a mile or two up HWY 180 with cabins, tent camping. pavilion and dinning area. Both are great for an over nighter.

Looks like I will head to Tellico Plains from KY on Saturday, May 9. Will likely tent camp. Internet search revealed two places in TC where I'm likely to stay if I don't go into the National Forest and camp at Indian Boundary National Recreation Area: 1. Cherohala Mountain Trail Campground and 2. Hunt's Lodge. Both look like my kind of place.

Anybody have experience with either place?

Will likely relocate to Two Wheels of Suches on Tuesday or Wednesday, and stay there for a few nights.

It will be nice to hit the road for a week or so. Will be on the Norge this time.

you need a set of america rides maps, they are the best. the 9 map set covers all the the smoke mountain region from Virginia  to Georgia.

Made it back home late yesterday from the ride in and around the Great Smoky Mountains. In 6 days, put 2,200 miles on the Norge, which ran like a champ.

Camped two nights at Hunt's MC campground in Tellico Plains: simple place with 5 small cabins and relatively small tent area (I slept in my tent every night on the trip); owners are nice people, $10 per night, wonderful shower house. Only negative was the constant braying of hound dogs off in the distance and the battle of the whip-poor-wills in the surrounding trees. Thank goodness for earplugs!

While in Tellico Plains I made several passes of the Cherohala Skyway; went to the resort at Deals Gap late Sunday afternoon, and only 15-20 bikes were there--big surprise. No, I didn't ride the Tail-of-the-dragon, as I have done that sooooo many times already. I also rode from there to Dahlonega, GA through Suches. Stopped to check out the changes at Two Wheels of Suches--looks pretty good. Drank a cup of coffee at Rider's Hill while I looked at the wonderful bikes on the showroom. The roads between Dahlonega and Tellico Plains are really remarkable.

Spent the next 3 nights in the Great Smoky Mountains NP; met up with some friends who were there fly fishing. While they fished during the daytime, I took rides south and east of the Park, including on a few sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway (made it close to Ashville)--what a great MC road! On two occasions we visited a microbrewery in Sylva, NC called Heinzelmannchen--nice people and great beers!

What a great start to the summer! I'm off again in a few days.
